Summary
Carl asks, “Coffee, ma’am?” and she shakes her head.
His eyebrows arch comically high and he scoffs, “What, are you pregnant?”
She doesn’t deny it fast enough, and Carl’s eyes go wide, a foghorn loud, “Stratt-”
And then he asks, “It’s his, right?” Swallows and unnecessarily adds, “Grace’s?”

Summary
Eva gives him privacy, leaving him sitting alone on the couch, a box of letters from his daughter from different stages of her life addressed to him in his lap. It’s incredibly daunting. He’s scared to read any of them, and he’s already emotional from the past few hours of Eva recounting fond memories of her life with their daughter—the life that he wasn’t there for, and one he was never meant to be a part of.
It’s a bittersweet feeling.
OR
Grace reads the letters that his daughter wrote to him while he was in space, and definitely doesn’t cry—not even a little (lying).

There would never be another plate of his grandmother’s cookies on her desk.
There would never be another Ryland Grace.
or: Eva Stratt goes to San Francisco to gather items from Ryland's apartment. It’s not nearly as simple as it should be.
