He looked back down at the book on his lap. It was some sappy romance book that had popped up on his TikTok feed. He thought it might be a mindless read and something that he could lose himself and his worries in. But it was only serving as a very, very painful reminder that he hadn’t felt the touch of another person in a romantic context in far, far too long. The weather wasn’t helping all that much either. The only thing he wanted to do was either fall asleep and hope he woke up sometime in the future, or just… disappear.

Summary
This isn’t like Austria 2019, when Charles couldn’t even look at Max after he’d been pushed off the track in the last lap. Max is all smiles, not a single care in the world that both of their floors are definitely damaged beyond belief due to running each other off the track.
Three times each, no penalties deployed.
Charles manages to spray Max in the face, who’s eyes close as his entire body jerks, curling slightly in on himself. This raises his arms and Charles gets another eyeful of champagne. He yelps, and some of the sparking wine drips down into his mouth.
Max and Charles both open their eyes at the same time, and dissolve into laughter.

Max has to take two drags of his cigarette before he can answer, and even then all he says is, “He knew I was the head chef, didn’t he.”
Charles has to have known. Even if the news hadn’t reached him that Max had taken over as the head chef of Taureau Rouge, he would not have travelled all the way from Paris to London for an interview at a restaurant without knowing who he’d be working under.
Still, Charles was the one who broke up with him. Max has to know, for sure.
“He knows,” Christian confirms softly. “He outright laughed at me when I called and asked him to come work at one of my restaurants. It was only after I said it was Taureau Rouge, working with you, that he agreed to come.”
Fuck. Fuck.
Max could’ve gone his whole life without knowing that. He probably fucking should have, because how is he supposed to be normal about it?
