Summary
" “-There is an actual point in what I'm trying to say here, Prongs. You think you'll ever be ready to listen?
- I'm all ears, Wolfie.
- Thanks, Bambi. Now,” he said, his smirk disappearing, “let's summarize what Lily reproaches you.
- Is that really necessary?
- Shut up and listen, Potter, for I am sent by celestial authorities to enlighten you with the beacon of truth. Now, Lily says that you're egocentric, vain, full of yourself, a bully and, basically, a git, which is quite true in itself, despite my five-year efforts to coax you out of it.” " -

Summary
Robby heads out on his road trip with the intention of going it alone. Too bad that Abbot's not on the same page and doesn't intend to leave Robby alone, even if he does have every excuse in the book for why he keeps turning up like a bad penny on Robby's path.

Bookmarker's Notes
I loved the premise of this!!! Tbh I was expecting Jack to be turning up in a scary, almost eerie manner, but you made it so normal - when, really, it is Not. I loved that he had plausible excuses for every time he turned up out of nowhere.
I think the appeal of this story partly rests in what Robby himself understands once he gets to Alberta: that sometimes you run very far from yourself and others while still wishing That One Person to magically appear to stick with you because they're that stubborn and they love you that much.
I liked that the trip was genuinely therapeutic to Robby, enough for him to recognise some of what he's been feeling, but not enough to make him better, because that's simply not how it works. And that penultimate scene in Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump when Jack appears and the kiss feels like something natural, inevitable, "no yearning anymore, no waiting" - that was very powerful and satisfying.
Also, in Montana, when Jack says that his wife was his past and Robby is his present and hopefully his future - he has been so full of love and present all along! -

Summary
“So,” he says. “You struck out with your date and figured you’d come around my place, see if you could salvage the night? I’ll have you know, I’m not like the other girls. I won’t put out for anything less than Tiffany’s.”
Let Robby joke. Jack will answer him honestly.

Fantastic FANTASTIC read. The tone and banter and humour and flow are surreally good. I want to chew on this story until it enters my bloodstream.

Summary
The groceries beat Jack to Robby’s place, but not by much. The milk’s not even sweaty. There’s a good chance one or both of the house’s inhabitants are asleep when he opens the door, so he resists the urge to belt out a cancel worthy Ricky Ricardo impression. The curlicue-script-on-a-heart sentiment of it is definitely swelling in his chest, though. Home. This was almost his home, eleven years ago. He tiptoed right up to the threshold, then stumbled back. Now he’s powering through the door with about thirty pounds of freight per arm, because fuck multiple trips. Robby and the baby are waiting for him.

Summary
Dana caught him dozing in the rocking chair, Baby Jane Doe still in his arms.
“36 hours, max,” she said, which is how Robby ended up in an Uber with two bags of baby gear.

Bookmarker's Notes
So, so, so good. They have so much history together.
He remembered a night once, before Covid, when they’d rented a cabin with the girls, and he had walked out onto the porch to find Jack, hands in his pockets, staring up at the sky. He hugged him from behind, hard, fast, nose pressed into the back of his neck, and never mentioned it again.
And Robby taking care of BJD for 36 hours and Jack showing up to "help" (keep an eye on him) and time becoming this malleable labile thing at the hands of a newborn. Whitaker dropping by and it's a bit funny and a lot earnest when he says Please don't kill yourself I don't want a bachelor pad just come back we need you. And Robby realising that Jack is going to miss him. And them negociating beginning and end of TEMS missions check-ins vs constant helmet use. And the baby. It doesn't solve anything but it's a ray of hope.
