During vital negotiations, Shang Qinghua accidentally poisons the leader of a rival tribe. Then, when he tries to fix his mistake, he manages to get himself and Mobei-jun stuck in each other's bodies.
Now, all he has to do is impersonate Mobei-jun convincingly enough to fool the other tribe, cure their leader, soothe tensions with a pack of angry demons, and renegotiate a once-in-a-lifetime treaty, all while ignoring his growing attraction to Mobei-jun.

“Morbid? Not at all.” Wei Wuxian tightened his grip on the hilt of his sword, knuckles pushing whitely through the skin. “I think it’s very fitting. Unless this new strategist the Emperor has sent for can work some kind of miracle, we are all going to die here.”

For years, Wei Wuxian had been visiting Hanguang-jun at Cloud Recesses any time that his travels took him nearby. Or even when he wasn’t nearby. For reasons known only to themselves, the pair of them had been maintaining an unconvincing veneer of friendship around others and, more perplexingly, between themselves.
Until the night hunts. Then, away from Lan Qiren and the cultivation world at large, they indulged. Just a little, nothing scandalous, and always with a layer (however sheer) of plausible deniability. Lan Jingyi was sick of their shit.
As he waited, voices began to reach him, drifting on the evening breeze. Hanguang-jun and Wei Wuxian. They weren’t close yet, and Lan Jingyi could only pick out snatches, just enough to discern the shape of the conversation. A giggle; a low, indulgent Mnn from Hanguang-jun; a breathy Lan-er-gege from Wei Wuxian. Lan Jingyi sighed and dug the toe of his boot into the dirt.
It was going to be a long night.

“No, not business. I have an old friend in Cloud Recesses. A very good friend.” Wei Wuxian paused, marshalling his thoughts. “The last time I visited, I…” His thoughts were proving harder to marshall than he thought, twisting and slipping away from long avoided scrutiny. “I behaved foolishly. Which isn’t like me at all.” Wei Wuxian laughed unconvincingly. “Then, and this very much is like me, I just…left.”
“Ah, well. Not to worry. The Lans are good people. I’m sure you’ll have no bother working it out, especially with a good friend. Good friends forgive us our mistakes. Now, will there be anything else?”
Wei Wuxian shook his head and kept staring at his drink as the innkeeper moved away. He drank the whole cup abruptly, closing his eyes against the sting of liquor and keeping them closed. Good friends forgive us our mistakes, the innkeeper had said. They certainly do, thought Wei Wuxian. And they just keep on forgiving.
He sat and watched the fire for a long time.
