Steve Harrington is dead.
That is a fact, that is a truth of the universe. Just like the sky is blue and the earth is round.
As much as she tries to deny it to herself, as much as they tell themselves over and over again that isn’t true. As much as she waits with bated breath every single day for the moment she wakes up and finds out this has all just been some weird, twisted, really fucked up dream …
It’s the truth.
Mostly because they had seen it for themselves. Had watched it happen right in front of their very own two eyes. Had sat right there next to him. Had watched as the light left his eyes, had heard as he he took his final breath, had felt as his heart stopped beating.
Steve Harrington had died.

Sometimes he feels like a stray dog Steve found on the side of the road; desperate for affection and clinging overwhelmingly to its new owner. Like if he holds on tight enough he'll never have to beg for scraps again. Other times he's that same dog turned antisocial. Cruel. Lashing out at the person showing it kindness because it doesn't recognise it. Doesn't think it deserves it.

Summary
The breath leaves his lungs, and Eddie feels himself go lax, warmth spreading through his veins.
Because Steve's kissing him.
Because Steve still doesn't say a lot, still seems trapped in his own thoughts a lot of the time which is fine because Eddie does enough talking for the both of them but it means he hadn't expected…this.
After a moment that Eddie knows is permanently seared into his memory, Steve pulls away. Ducks his head, suddenly bashful.
"Sorry," he mumbles. "Just felt…right."

Over time, a suicidal Steve begins to recover, with Eddie at his side.
Along the way, love blooms.

Now that Eddie's closer, his heart rate starts to quicken. Because from here, he can see the tear tracks on Steve's mole-spattered cheeks, the way his free hand is white-knuckling the edge of the concrete. "Steve?" he murmurs.
"Mmm?"
"How about you come back a little from the edge?" He keeps his voice as even as he can manage.
"Why?"
"Because, I dunno if you've noticed, but it's a really long way down."
"I noticed."
But he doesn't move.

Summary
She smiles at him, breathtakingly beautiful, walking toward the rec room to wait for him to be done. Her gaze breaks from his as she reaches the entryway and her body goes still, mouth gaping a little. His hackles start to raise.
“Joyce? Is everything okay? Did something hap-” She motions for him to shush and come over.
‘Walk quietly.’ She mouths. He obeys, keeping his boots as quiet as he can on the linoleum floor. He gets to the doorway and finds what she’s gawking at.
It's Steve, and that Munson boy. Lying on the too-small WSQK couch, dead to the world.
