"I have Ms. Kelly today," Max says, almost bitterly. "You'll be okay at lunch without me?" she says it sarcastically, like a joke, but there's an undercurrent of something else in her voice; for a moment, she almost sounds scared.
Will releases her hand, even as they walk out of the gym doors together. "Works out for me," he tells her, "I have that project for art I have to finish up anyways." He pauses, hesitates. "Will you be okay without me?"
Max takes a breath, and then gives him a shaky smile, one that doesn't quite reach her eyes. "I'll have your tape," she says, wiggling the wires of her headphones. "See you after school."

Then he was spotted, and the boy stopped in his tracks; with skillful movements, he quickly slung the rifle off his shoulder and pointed it at Mike’s chest. Mike raised his hands while trying to keep most of his weight on his left leg.
“Whoa. Hey,” Mike said, his eyes wide as he stared at the tip of the rifle. “Just hold on. I’m not—I’m not going to hurt you.”

Will fumbled through his first aid kit. “Alright, c’mere, you look like Aragorn.”
“That’s not a bad thing.” Mike pointed out with a sly grin, scooting close to him.
“You’ve got blood everywhere. So definitely not HOT Aragorn.” Will corrected, before realizing exactly what he’d said, eyes widening.
“Not that-” Will swallowed. “I think-” he stopped and stared at the stuff he’d pulled from the bag.
“Let’s just. Get you cleaned up.” Will muttered, closing himself off. Shutting Mike out. Mike knew what that looked like.
Will used to do it, when Lonnie would get mad. Shut everything out. Mike hated it.
Did he mean what he'd said about Aragorn? Or was Mike overthinking it like always? Hope fluttered in his chest, hot and dangerous. He wanted to reach out and tell Will that it was fine, that he didn’t mind.
That he wasn’t alone. That he didn’t have to be alone.
But Mike Wheeler was a coward. So he didn’t say anything at all.
-mike and will skip class and, after a bike ride resulting in a bad fall, end up at a rebuilt castle byers. confessions and kisses ensue.
