Caitlyn’s eyes flicked to the bandage at her side, then back to her face. Her reply came just as gently, a mirror of that same effort to keep things from unraveling. “You didn’t.”
Vi leaned against the doorframe, favoring one side. She gestured vaguely at herself, her mouth tugging into the shadow of a smile. “Looks worse than it is.”
A joke missing its punchline.
Caitlyn didn’t smile. She didn’t even blink.
She wanted to drag Vi to the mirror. Make her look. Make her see the woman Caitlyn had just watched stagger into their home. The blood. The bruises. The way she always seemed to walk the line between defiant and self-destructing, like she thought pain made her real.

A one-shot set after the war, after Caitlyn and Vi return to their roles as Enforcers — after a day that left them both gutted.
A boy died on their watch. Vi disappeared. Caitlyn waited.

It was a room. A very precarious state of what should be a room. Or maybe cell was a better description. There was a sink and a toilet on one side. A metal bed attached to the wall in front of her. Everything seemed very old, as if it had been stored and forgotten there for years.
Caitlyn saw she was not alone. Under the bed, occupying the smallest possible space, there was a person.
A child.
"What's your name? I'm Vi," she continued when there was no response. If Caitlyn couldn't see the girl's chest rising and falling, she'd doubt whether she was even alive. "This is Caitlyn. Who are you?"
The minutes passed. Caitlyn was already thinking of her fifth contingency plan when the child moved. An almost imperceptible movement. A slight lift of her neck, allowing for a better view of her intruders. "Lavender," her voice was thin, yet hoarse, as if it hadn't been exercised in a while.
"Nice to meet you, Lavender."

It all started with a note - written in the ugliest handwriting Caitlyn had ever seen.
"I used your bed. Funny fact, you smell like cupcakes."
In the break room, they had six beds distributed for use among shifts. But Caitlyn's bed wasn't part of that set. No, she had bought a seventh piece of furniture with her own money - with a mattress specifically made for her shoulder and lower back pains.
Everyone knew they shouldn't lie down there. Except, apparently, the new hire.
As a first offense, Caitlyn decided to let it slide, with a simple note on the bed.
"Property of Caitlyn Kiramman."
Maybe the mistake had been due to ignorance, after all. Although, three days later, to her complete displeasure, came her response.
"Good to know you have a name, Cupcake. PS: your mattress is really good."

Recent days had seen an increase in her mobility, the pain from a bruised ACL, a surgically repaired abdomen and multiple broken ribs becoming more manageable. It was progress, great progress actually given how battered her body had been following the war. It just…presented new challenges.
Because Caitlyn would never have tripped over that stool before.

Cassandra looks down at her tea. “To put it simply, she refused to pose. He never saw her face.”
Vi sits up a little straighter, concern tightening her muscles.
“Why won’t she be painted, exactly?” The image of the smudged face barrages her, filling her vision with blue and gold.
“She refuses this marriage,” she replies sternly, lines etched along her brow. Cassandra glances up to her own wedding portrait before meeting Vi’s gaze again. “You must paint her without her knowing.”

Summary
Different families have different mixtures, he tells her. The Kirammans have always liked to add a variety of mushrooms for fragrance and texture so Caitlyn mixes in the finely chopped pieces as he hands them to her to mix into the filling.
It’s oily on her fingers, the minced pork just the right ratio of fat to lean, the mushrooms and diced cabbage having been squeezed of water. Caitlyn adds the salt, pepper, drizzling on the sesame oil the way they always have.
Then Father reaches for a few water chestnuts and Caitlyn giggles as Mother’s face pinches.
“I don’t see why they must crunch, dear. Don’t we get enough texture from the cabbage?”
Caitlyn makes dumplings with family.

Caitlyn panicked, feeling extraordinarily unprepared having been thrust into her new position without so much as even a handbook to consult. What were the formalities? What was she supposed to respond with? Where was the damn push to talk button…
“Hellooo? I said Houston, do you copy?”
Caitlyn fiddled with her headset, having finally found the green button on the side and hastily letting out a rather breathless reply. “Um, yes. Hello? This is Houston. I copy.”
There was a long pause in which Caitlyn sat twiddling her thumbs, anxiety pushing the frantic pulse of her heartbeat through her eardrums. Was that wrong? Did she already fuck up? She took a steady deep breath, finger hovering over the talk button until the familiar voice of the astronaut came through her headset once more.
“Damn, Houston. I didn’t expect you to sound so sexy.”

Caitlyn has been assigned as the personal capcom to one of the astronauts currently on a year long expedition at the international space station. Cue long months of pining and desperate longing.
