    Summary

    At times, Touya will wake up drenched in sweat, his mind back on that smoking battlefield, and he’ll hear Shouto cry his name to keep him conscious.
    He'll be in that hospital room again, a tube pumping Shouto’s blood into his veins, like a red string of fate. Touya had been out of it, but he remembers that sight, that feeling, vividly. The weight of Shouto’s hand in his, how he’d refused to let him go, is seared into his brain.
    As much as Touya compartmentalizes to keep self-doubt out of his choices, there’s no lying to himself about one thing. It had been that crushing grip, more than the transfusion, that saved his life. More than the skin grafts, more than this second shot at life itself.
    Who was this person that Shouto loved with such fury? Had Touya gotten it wrong from the start, thinking he had to fill someone else’s shoes instead of simply being?

    There’s a question bubbling in his eyes, but Natsuo has the feeling it’s only tangentially related to the cooking lesson. They’ve been together for a long time; Natsuo can recognize what doubt looks like on his face.
    “What’s wrong?”
    Tenko doesn’t respond right away. His gaze stays on the hotpot, his eyes glazing over in thought. When he speaks, he doesn’t sound self-deprecatory, only contemplative.
    “Does it hold you back that I’m stuck in tutorial mode?” he asks, chin lifting to study him.
    “What? No,” Natsuo says immediately, his brows furrowing. “Why would it?”
    Tenko shrugs. “There’s a lot of shit that Sensei and the Doctor didn’t bother teaching me. Stuff I didn’t need to be a Symbol of Terror, but that others take for granted.”

    “I knew you’d be up for the challenge. That makes this easier.”
    Rumi leans forward, ignoring the shock of pain exploding in her right side.
    “This?” she echoes.
    The President glances at her wounds too, then her face, like she's scanning Rumi's micro-expressions to spot a weakness. She won’t find one.
    “You have to understand that you have a duty as the number one now,” she says. Rumi blames the drugs for how it takes her a couple of seconds for the words to truly sink in. “That comes with certain expectations—”
    “Hold the fuck up,” Rumi interrupts with a scowl. “What did you just say?”

    Or: in the aftermath of the Jakku Hospital raid, hero society finds itself on the verge of an unprecedented crisis. With the top ten in tatters and faith in heroes at its lowest point in history, the Commission needs a brave face to weather the storm.

    Summary

    The day Lord Todoroki’s firstborn came into the world, a curse befell his land. Lightning tore up the clear sky, demons crawled out of it, and a baby wailed his first cry.
    The pact was sealed.
    Devils would roam the earth freely, but no samurai army would taint the Lord’s rice fields with blood. The region would prosper. He would be the greatest ruler of his era. His newborn’s sacrifice wouldn’t be in vain, if devouring him alive would sate the demons’ hunger long enough to bring peace.
    The baby was left wailing until his voice died out, but not even the love of a mother could ease his pain. He could not hear nor see, for he had no ears or eyes. In their place, gaping holes adorned a skinless face. A monster, the midwife cried when she saw him, bolting out of Lady Rei’s chambers.
    A monster, the Lord agreed, eyeing it like it was one of the fiends he’d summoned. Averting his eyes from the gruesome malformations, he ordered a servant to abandon it in a river.
    His second son could be his heir.

    The job had been simple enough. Get inside Dabi's apartment and collect as much intel on him as possible. Risky and sudden, not to mention not how Hawks would've played his cards, but certainly doable. Or so Hawks had begrudgingly thought, before he ended up getting caught in a hurricane that left his life in shambles.

    “I want to join your crew,” Hawks declares, making steady eye contact.
    For a beat, Dabi's too stunned to react. Then he starts laughing.
    Of all things the fucker could've come up with—
    "What's a man like you have to offer to a pirate?" he snarks, using his pistol to tilt Hawks' chin up and to stare better at those defiant eyes. "I thought Navy officers didn't kill." He raises his eyebrows mockingly. "Or should I say former Navy officers?"
    Or;
    When the opportunity to destroy Governor Todoroki presents itself in the form of his ex first in command begging for Dabi's mercy, Dabi seizes it like a prize. Unfortunately, their newfound partnership is anything but smooth sailing.

    Summary

    Hawks blinked out of his stupor, looking at the bag of flour Twice had pushed into his chest like it was a dog with rabies.
    His birthday. But that wasn’t until the 28th, right? It couldn’t be—His eyes flickered to the calendar on the wall. Oh. It was his birthday. He must’ve lost track of time, what with the mission and his messed up sleep schedule. But that didn’t explain the bag of flour in his hands, nor the sudden knotting of his stomach.
    The League of villains was making him cake.
    or;
    In which Hawks finds out that baking with the League is harder than any S-ranked mission, Dabi likes poetry and dodging responsibility, Shigaraki needs a nap, Toga and Twice are the worst at subtlety, and Spinner's nose saves the day. Not necessarily in that order.

    Summary

    The apartment is not that special. It’s just on this side of cozy, the rent average for Fukuoka, but it’s big enough for two people and that’s what makes it a home.
    They decided to forego a moving company, not keen on drawing the media’s attention after Dabi’s release. That’s how a Friday evening finds Dabi sorting through the boxes for a pair of pajamas as Hawks does all the heavy lifting. A flurry of red feathers carries inside the last box from Dabi's run-down truck, and Hawks slumps heavily against the door.
    “You’re getting out of shape,” Dabi teases, like the hypocrite he is, as Hawks rubs his eyelids tiredly.

    Summary

    (CW manga spoilers)

    There’s nothing god-like in Shigaraki’s unnatural paleness, or his shortness of breath. His skin is still patching itself up over burnt tissue. It’s only a few shades paler than Dabi’s own, but all too familiar.
    Dabi’s gaze snaps to the unmistakable silhouette of Endeavor, hovering above the ground on flame jets. He’s several meters away, assessing the scene with a calculating frown, his deadly, blood-stained hands balled into fists—trying to spot a weakness, or perhaps just trying to cool himself down.
    That fucking bastard.
    An all too familiar simmering dances in Dabi’s veins, getting closer and closer to his fingertips. It’s then that it strikes Dabi. Shigaraki isn’t just exhausted. If the regen quirk is anything to go by, today should’ve been Shigaraki’s last day on Earth. He’s a dead man walking.
    Like Dabi.
    Manic, murderous glee starts bubbling up Dabi’s chest, only to be stopped by Shigaraki’s chilly stare meeting his.
    Not yet, those red eyes command.

    Summary

    Life as a civilian is boring. Even between apartment hunting with Fuyumi and his ex-convict nuisances showing up at the parlor “for old time’s sake”, it’s far too mundane. How do people cope with minor annoyances without resorting to extreme violence?
    He supposes that most of them don’t share a shift with Shigaraki Tomura. That’s an unfair advantage. His ex-boss turned co-owner—a decision Dabi regrets every day—has been whining about customers all morning.
    “If I have to tattoo another ‘United States of Smash’ on someone’s ass I’m gonna become a villain again,” he grumbles under his breath, not even waiting for Kurogiri to finish ringing up his client first. Dabi shoots him a glare. One of these days he’s gonna send them out of business with his lack of tact.
    Not that Dabi is much better. Good thing this isn’t about him.

    or: several years after the League pays their debt with justice, they gather together in Dabi and Shigaraki’s co-owned tattoo parlor to discuss the future—and maybe to note how it’s not all that different from their past.

    Summary

    “I know they're only letting me reconnect with her to keep me nice and obedient,” Touya continued, and Hawks’ heart jumped to his throat. “But I'm gonna get her out of her prison too, one day.” Touya’s eyes fell to the loopy, elegant penmanship in blue ink, and his mouth twisted into a grimace. “They cannot keep me here forever. They can't. There's a life out there, Hawks, and it isn't theirs to own.”

    Hawks let out a stressed chirp before he could help it, slapping a palm on his mouth a moment later. In a place like this, walls had ears, and they both knew it. At least, Hawks did. Touya liked to test his luck a lot more. To him, the HPSC training grounds were only the second scariest place in the world. He’d been around for less time than Hawks, too, so Hawks didn’t fault him for it. Touya could still remember a life before it.
    But Hawks couldn’t find it in himself to try and steer Touya away from his pipe dreams. Not when he could see the glossiness of Touya's eyes even without the aid of his sharpened eyesight.
    It was despair, he thought.

    Or: Touya is a trainee in the same Hero Program as Hawks. That is, until one day he's sent on a mission and doesn't come back.

    “So, you’ve met Ink?” asks Compress, with the air of someone who’s already enjoying the drama that will inevitably follow his enquiry.
    Dabi gives him a tepid stare back. “Who?”
    Compress entwines his fingers together and brings them to his mouth, hiding a smile. “Our resident feline roommate,” he clarifies.
    Dabi’s apathetic expression doesn’t change, but from the way Compress’ smile widens, you’d have thought that Dabi had confessed to owning Stain merch.
    or;
    the League moves into a different hideout, and while they settle in, they discover it comes with a feline rommate. Everyone loves it, and Dabi pretends he doesn't. It all spirals from there.

    Summary

    Tenko is strong. He knows he is—no matter what Father says, because Father is a liar. He told Tenko that the forest was brimming with wild animals; he recounted tales of vanishing children and mangled corpses found next to the river. But Tenko is fifteen already, and he knows better than to trust the lies the adults tell him to control his every action. Even Hana does, despite being the one who told him of their Grandma. So Tenko sneaks away from her as well. She wouldn’t understand, and he doesn’t trust her not to snitch to Father.
    The forest is dense and difficult to wade through for the untrained feet, but it’s also Tenko’s only friend. It offers herbs that relieve the sting of his black eye, along with shade and silence after Father’s hurtful words.
    So Tenko keeps coming back, and the longer he does, the more comfortable he grows around its dangers.
    But they watch him, like a predator savoring a good meal.

    Summary

    Hawks’ lips resisted a twitch. This time, he could feel the weight of apathetic blue eyes pinned on him, searching for a reaction. Their pull was almost magnetic—air charged with an unspoken…something. It didn't help that in the past weeks Hawks had often found that gaze trained on him, following him as he talked to Bubaigawara, scrutinizing his every move, absently tracking the gestures of his gloved hands when Dabi thought Hawks wasn’t looking. Lingering. The attention was both electrifying and infuriating. It drove Hawks insane, because the expression to match on Dabi’s face was always one of stone-faced detachment.

    Hawks could do with supervision. He could do with strict, impossible to please bosses. He could even do with the occasional unbuttoning of Dabi’s collar, with the passive-aggressive, sometimes tactile over-familiarity, or with the brief flashing of more scarred skin when Dabi took off his coat—Hawks was a professional. What he couldn’t deal with was the confusion knotting his stomach when the occasional touches remained accidental, when the crass remarks were just to get under his skin, when the seduction was never purposeful.

    Don’t fall for your target.

    Summary

    Their little routine had started a month into their third year—and went on for three times as long.
    Touya would knock on the rooftop door and, like clockwork, Takami would answer it. Sometimes they’d eat lunch together, stealing food from each other’s bento. Like friends. Or they would lean into each other’s shoulders and pretend it was an accident. Not quite like friends.
    Sometimes Touya would pull out a cigarette, and Takami would steal it from his mouth halfway through, lamenting how much easier it was for Touya to mask the smell thanks to his fire quirk. He’d grin lazily and take just a few drags before returning the butt to Touya’s waiting lips, bending his neck back to blow out plumes of smoke in the sky—and if Touya didn’t know that for Takami it was just a game of push and pull, he’d think that a metaphor. The smoke soared high in the sky on its own waxless wings.

    Summary

    Retrieving two cans from the fridge, Natsuo pointedly avoided thinking of the other, more selfish reason to still stick around Japan’s most dangerous crime syndicate. Sure, there was a certain appeal in having a secret his father would raise hell at... Natsuo ‘had a bright career ahead of him’, or so Enji had said once he’d bothered looking Natsuo’s way—and wasn’t that thrilling? Turns out, he wasn’t a failure! But Natsuo had stared at Shigaraki’s profile lit by a tv screen one time too many to pin his latest rebellion on a fit for his father’s attention.
    Natsuo sighed, closing the fridge door. He was so immersed in his pointless musings that he didn’t immediately hear the furious buzzing nearby, muffled by a pillow as it was. That is, until the thing fell to the floor—Shigaraki’s phone, Natsuo recognized once he glanced that way. He shouted a call of his name, but only got a muffled grumble back. Shigaraki was no doubt too absorbed in his game to give a fuck about his still buzzing device, and Natsuo—
    Natsuo hadn’t really meant to catch a glimpse of the screen.
    or;
    Tomura has Natsuo as his lockscreen. Natsuo finds out.

    Summary

    Hawks opened the box to pull out its contents. It was a ring, silver tinted and fancy, but Dabi could bet it was just regular silver lacquered iron. It had a tiny stylized hawk on it, its wings spreading wide, and when Hawks pulled it out, the plastic red gems on them shone under the light of Hawks’ living room. Dabi supposed they were there to nod at Hawks’ quirk. Fucking hero merch. They couldn’t even get his eye color right. The bird showcased two stony, turquoise gems as makeshift eyes, sat atop a proud beak facing stubbornly forward.
    Dabi didn’t have the time to stare at it in disgust any more, because Hawks chose that moment to drop on one knee in front of him.
    Dabi gaped.
    “Is this a prank?”

    or;
    Hawks proposes to Dabi with a custom-made version of one of his pieces of hero merch. That's it, that's the fic.
