"Vecna could've killed him. Why didn't he?"
The words spill out of Mike, his posture hunched as his eyes the floor and his thumb brushes against Will's. Nancy can tell Mike has been dwelling on those thoughts so she lets him answer his own question.
"Nancy, Vecna's trying to weaken him completely. He has to. Because..we all know Will can sense him. And it's jeopardizing his plans, so he needed to take him out of the picture. But he still kept him alive. Vecna is still after him. And now what? I'll still lose him, just later now? Nancy- Nancy. You don’t understand. I. I cant lose him. I can’t. Because-"
Mike abruptly stops, snapping his mouth shut and darting his eyes away from her watchful gaze.
Oh. Oh.
The puzzle pieces click into place and she feels realization wash over her slowly.

After a harrowing incident where Will almost drowns, secrets spill at his hospital's bedside.

“Without you?” Tubbo whispered. Tommy shouldn’t have heard it, with the rumbling sounds and sirens ringing he should’ve been inaudible.
But he did.
A change descended over Tommy’s face, his face falling.

“No, Tommy. How much have things changed between us? Do you really think I could live without you anymore then you could without me?”

“In the ten years I’ve known them, I’ve never once seen them sit more than six inches away from each other. This is worse than the summer of ‘85.”

When Mike and Will get in an argument, the Party comes up with a plan to get them back together again (as purely-platonic friends, of course).

“Well, maybe not, Lucas says, rolling his eyes, “but I know that worrying isn’t going to do shit for Will.”
“Funny — I could say the same thing about Max,” Mike retorts.
A scowl forms on Lucas’s face, and he goes tense, like he’s bracing himself for a full-fledged fight. “That’s different,” he starts to say.
Then, suddenly, he stops.
It’s as if someone has clicked the PAUSE button on a television, and Mike watches as his best friend goes still. Recognition flashes across Lucas’s face, and his brow furrows as he looks up, meeting Mike’s eyes. And though he doesn’t say anything, Mike can tell the exact moment when it clicks.
“Oh, shit,” Lucas breathes.

In the aftermath of Will's newly unlocked powers and Max's escape from Camazotz, Mike confides in Lucas about his newly realized feelings for Will.

“I’m just…thinking.”
“Well, can you think out loud?” Will gripes, sounding tense and unhappy even as he settles back against Mike’s chest. “You’re making me nervous.”
Mike laughs a little. “I’m not sure I should; I don’t want to freak you out.”
“Mike,” and Will sounds supremely unimpressed, “I just took control of three Demos, two of which were miles away, and proceeded to snap their limbs and kill them with my mind. Not only that, I just told you that I did it by drawing strength, in large part, from being your friend. You’re worried about freaking me out? Really?”
“Yeah, and I’m the guy who watched you do it and thought that it was the hottest thing I’d ever seen in my life, so what does that say about me?”
There’s a long, shocked silence.
“See, this is why I don’t think out loud,” Mike jokes weakly.

Mike falls a little bit more in love with Will because, at this point, who wouldn't? He just saved Mike's life, after all. Unfortunately, the others don't quite see it that way, and it's getting to Will a little bit. Mike intends to remedy that.
