“Are you okay with this?” Abby asks.
A lock of Luka’s hair falls over his eyes. He doesn’t brush it back.
“What do you mean?” he asks.
“Having a child again.”
He looks at her, frowning. “Of course.”
“No, I mean—I know you want a baby.” She fiddles with the bright pink corner of the page. New! the bright text reads, before she flicks it from sight. “But are you, I don’t know. Worried, maybe?”
Luka stares. He’s a hapless fawn and she’s the bright headlights of a monstrous truck. Or she’s the deer, with Bambi at her feet, and he’s the metalloid.
“Why would I be?” he says.
She opens her mouth. Closes it. He doesn’t say anything, just keeps staring at her.

Summary
It’s a sweeping, romantic kiss—until Lucy licks into his mouth in a manner decidedly not appropriate for a department function. Flynn groans, helpless, and his grip on her waist turns carnal.
Long ago, she used to dream of this—kissing Flynn. (She would jolt up in bed at night, heart hammering, her need throbbing, and jump once more at Noah’s concerned touch to her lower back.) In the dreams, he took without hesitation, pushing her where he wanted her as he did in their early antagonistic interactions. She knows better now—he’s happiest trailing after her. And she’s happiest when he’s red-faced and cross-eyed after she’s done with him.
With a shuddering gasp, she pulls back for air. Flynn’s eyes hold a hunger in them that leaves no question of his intent, and, oh, she is very much on board for that.
“What if I don’t want to dance anymore?” she asks, low.

“Absolutely not,” Rufus says, and honestly, Garcia agrees. He’s nowhere near forgiving her, let alone trust.
“Can I?” Lucy asks again.
The journal predicts remorse behind Lucy’s eyes. All he can see now is a challenge. Prove me wrong, they say. See how I’ll crumble when you do. See how that makes you feel.
He doesn’t trust her, yet, not with the music he likes nor his affinity for collecting turtlenecks. But he trusts her with his life, and she’ll trust him with hers. It’s funny how life and death seem so marginal and certain compared to Flynn’s magical ability to attract turtleneck sweaters, but it makes sense because Lucy Preston is both his lifeline and his curse.
He nods. Slow enough to show he trusts her, but not because he wants to.
