    Summary

Diesel is used to being wanted for a night and forgotten by morning. When he meets Day — blunt, exhausted, and entirely unimpressed by him — flirting doesn’t land the way it’s supposed to. A careless question about Day’s cousin reveals something steady and immovable beneath the surface, and for the first time, Diesel doesn’t feel in control of the moment. He doesn’t know it yet, but something about Day feels dangerously close to comfort — and Diesel has never known what to do with that.

    Summary

They say that when you hear ringing in your ears, it is the Angels speaking to you. The ringing of soft chimes and bells.

But the ringing is not gentle nor is it soft, not to Tanrak. It is deafening. It is loud and overbearing like the rage of a storm. Impossible thunder and flashes of blinding lightning. 150 days of rain, bringing the Great Flood to Tanrak’s mind.

The Angels are not speaking to him. They are yelling, frenzied bouts of angry spells. The Angels are warning him that something is coming.

    Summary

“Please,” Barth said again, voice catching on the broken edge of hope. “Let me have him.”

Barth fell on to his knees, eyes shut tight, hands curled in supplication— praying like a man who had faith, pleading to a God he still didn't believe in, for the one thing he’d ever dared to call sacred.

"Please. Let him love me back."

    Summary

“I once thought that you had no idea how hurtful it was to have your feelings be called sinful. As if loving someone was a moral failure, a wrongdoing,” Barth says, measuring his words, his jaw clenching as he forces himself to be vulnerable with Tanrak.

    Again and again and again.

“But you do know, don’t you? You have always known, deep in your heart. It hurts you just the same as it hurts me. But Tanrak—”

Tanrak hears the hitch in his voice, the waver that indicates how much Barth is trying to hide beneath his composure.

“I can’t take much more of this,” Barth admits, his tone hushed as if it physically pains him to admit this truth, this reality.

In which Barth pushes, Tanrak pulls and shame undoes what love had once built up. There’s only so much Barth can take before the hurt becomes overbearing. There’s only so much Tanrak can take before his heart has to let go.
