Summary
A story spun out of Book 11 - The War of The Wolf - Uhtred, Finan and Sigtrygrr have marched North and climbed higher and higher to reach Skoll’s fortress, Heahburh, where they try and attack. The attack fails, and Uhtred watches in horror as Finan is grabbed from the pallisade and dragged into the Wolf’s lair.
Several days have passed and Finan is still somewhere in that fortress, Uhtred is going crazy and Skoll is experimenting with the wolf warriors’ battle ointment to make Finan’s captivity go with a bang.

Though Uhtred was often loathe to adhere to royal commands, he acceded to King Edward's request and took Aethelstan under his wing. Off and on for the last year, Uhtred and his men have been traveling Northumbria in order to prepare Aethelstan for his destiny as the King of all Saxons.
Playing nursemaid and tutor to an aetheling was certainly not what Finan expected to be doing while in Uhtred’s service but he follows, because it is important to his Lord, to the possibility of an England, and because he cares for the young boy.
Despite the myriad dangers hidden in the hills of Northumbria, Finan finds that it may also be a land of possibility. For Finan, this means love and a home of his own. For Uhtred, this may mean another chance at retaking Bebbanburg.

Summary
Uhtred's reputation as a Warrior and a Lord has grown and reached far and wide. So far and wide, in fact, that most of it is purely made up or widely exaggerated by the time they reach him again. He mostly ignored what he heard and never corrected the stories that reached his ears. He now realizes that maybe he should have, because apparently, offerings are being sent his way from those seeking his protection, as you would a King. And one in particular is staring back at him. They mostly sent things you'd rarely find in the markets in the settlements around them. So, he accepted their offerings and used them to fund their protection. Their silver, after all. This was the first time someone sent a person as an offering. A Saxon. And Uhtred did not know what was expected of him.
