“Ow, fuck,” Hal cursed as he held his cut finger, turning away from where he had been rapidly chopping up vegetables and running his hurt hand beneath some cold water.
Bruce snapped his head up at the scent of iron in the air, sticky and cloying in his sensitive nostrils, and it was almost as if he were in a trance as he slid out of his chair behind the counter, rounded the island, and swiped his fingertip through the blood that Hal got on the cutting board.
He stuck it into his mouth and sucked, and when Hal turned to look at him, they both froze as they stared at each other. One in bewilderment and the other looking as if he had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Hal blinked. Then blinked again. And then he snorted, and while wrapping his sluggishly bleeding, numb finger in paper towels, he patted Bruce’s shoulder. “I’ll finish dinner in a second. No need to feed on my essence like an animal, B.”
And then he walked off to go stitch his wound closed.
