The village didn't even have a proper sign. Just a handmade wooden post with the word Baan Mokkam painted in faint blue, half-flaked away by rain and time. Welcome to nowhere. Aou had known he was coming to meet a doctor - someone who worked in the only clinic in the village.
“You're Aou?” he asked with a friendly smile.
Aou nodded. “You're the doctor?” He almost tripped over his own two feet as he walked over, suitcase dragging behind him.
“Correct,” he said. “Uncle Dam said you'd be easy to spot.”
“I get that a lot,” Aou muttered, “Something about my tragic city glow?”
“That, and your luggage.”
“I packed light,” Aou said dryly.
Doctor Boom grinned. “It's a short ride. Try not to fall off.”
Aou gripped the sides of the seat with white-knuckled hands, determined not to wrap his arms around the doctor even as the scooter bounced over a rut and sent him practically into the man's back.
“You don't talk much, huh?” Aou called out over the engine.
“I do,” Doctor Boom said. “Just not when I'm carrying someone cute on my bike.”
Aou stared at the back of his helmet. “What?”
“Nothing,” the doctor replied, voice breezy over the engine. “Just focused.”
