Summary
The locker room air is heavy with post-game adrenaline, the scent of sweat still lingering after everyone else has left, and Kent is frozen in place by Jack's gaze from across the room. He never thought he would get this chance, dreamt of it all his life but finally gave up after Jack made it clear that's not what he wanted. But now Jack is right there, wearing the same jersey as him, close enough to touch, if Kent could only move.
Kent is starting over in a new city, with a new team, has to after he almost partied himself half to death following Jack's marriage to a man that isn't him. Maybe, he thinks, he can finally focus on what matters again: hockey. Jack is out, married with the perfect life, playing for the team of someone else's dreams and desperately wishing things were different.

“What are you thinking about?” Jack muses, and Kent realizes he’s grinning like a fool.
“You,” he admits, sheepishly, and melts as Jack’s smile turns even softer. “The fact that I’m at your parents’ house, for Christmas, that I get to stay in your room, that you’re kissing me against your bedroom door, that you’ve got that silly grin on your face that I can’t stop looking at, that I’m gonna make you come in your childhood bed later tonight...”
It's 2008. Six months until the draft. And Kent doesn't know yet, how much he'll be losing.

On a porch, in the dark, somewhere in Broken Bow, Nebraska, on a random autumn Saturday, Robby brings his cigarette to Dennis' lips, as if it is the easiest thing in the world. But there is so much more to this one act of kindness, in the way his fingers brush against Dennis' lips, the way Dennis looks up at him through his lashes, eyes wide on his parents' porch. Dennis fears he might lose the family that raised him, but he isn't as scared, if it means he might gain a new one.
After Dennis' parents find out that he is trans and has been transitioning ever since leaving for medical school, Dr. Robby offers to drive him home to his parents, to do damage control.

He anticipates an annoying stay at some old mansion, watching out for the man as he sips champagne and flirts his way through the upper crusts of European society. Instead, he sees a charming, intriguing man, who looks at Bucky like no one else does. As Bucky tries to keep Zemo out of harms way, his past as an assassin haunts him, and this Christmas he has to re-learn how to care about someone, and be cared for.

Once again, Dennis pauses to think, willing his futile diploma into good use. He tries to stay focused as he meets Robby’s patient gaze, but the sight leaves his heart kicking erratically against his ribs.
“‘Come now, and let us reason together. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; if they’re red like crimson, they shall become like wool.’”
“Jeez, Whitaker,” Robby huffs, elated. “You got the whole book memorized?”
“Something like that.”
