Wemmbu lurched forwards as another blade swept towards Jaden’s exposed head. He ducked beneath it, one knee striking the ground before he forced himself upright and drove the shaft of his trident across the attacker’s chest. The man stumbled against the soldier beside him, opening enough space for Jaden to reach through. “Take this.”
Wemmbu caught the trident with his free hand, his fingers closing just above Jaden’s. For a moment they held it together while someone struck Wemmbu's sword, forcing him to turn his shoulder beneath the impact. “Jaden—”
Jaden held his gaze through the movement between them. His chest heaved beneath the damaged armour, and Wemmbu watched him swallow before he spoke again, raising his voice clearly enough to carry.
“I’ll catch up.”
