This wasn’t exactly how he had envisioned this day. It was one of the most important days of his life yet all he can feel is this bitter sadness dwelling deep in his bones, making them jitter like the cold.
It didn’t feel as good as he had imagined.
His eyes wandered and caught familiar features at the bar across the room. A tall brunette, standing slightly too upright for how drunk he probably was already and laughing with acquaintances. Wearing a white tux. It’s like he was rubbing it in. Salt in the barely healed wound.’

“Hey… So, I went shopping today….” He took a breath and shifted on his feet, eyes darting everywhere as he continued his one sided conversation. “They had some of that really expensive whisky you always had your eye on.”
He bit his lip. “I never knew why you wouldn’t just buy it. I knew you had the cash. Or at least the audacity to throw it into my basket… I would’ve got you it, y’know…”
Chuuya couldn’t help the sting in his eyes as he sucked in another more forceful breath.
He choked on an involuntary laugh.
“I did get you it. I know your birthday is coming up. I wanted to get you something so that you know I… care.”
The word was hard to get out as his jaw was shaky and tense now, making it hard to continue.
A hand shot up to cover his eyes. His brow line was aching.
“You know that I do care, don’t you? I always cared, ‘Samu. I-“ He’d forgotten to breathe.

Chuuya was no stranger to the Armed Detective Agency by now. In fact, they were almost on a first name basis. “Salutations, Blondie.” The ginger grumbled passively as he barged his way into the office where Blondie was working hard.
His hand held a scarlet envelope.
“He’s not here, Hatrack.” Kunikida shot back, although distractedly, due to his dedication to finishing his report before his schedule believed he would.
Chuuya had thought it extremely amusing when he found out that this was Dazai’s new partner. The man’s sanity never stood a chance from the moment that bastard walked through the agency’s doors. He almost pitied him.
“Where is he then?” Chuuya’s voice held an annoyance that Kunikida could sympathise with, especially when regarding Dazai.
“Probably scratching his ass somewhere, the lazy oaf. He never showed up today.”
Chuuya’s eyebrows furrowed ever so slightly as he looked at the man glued to his computer in front of him.

“I’m not participating in this weird ass fantasy where we spend the rest of our lives together. I’m not him and you know it,” Dazai bites out, renewing his efforts to get out of his bindings.
Nakahara’s hand shoots out to pin him against the couch and stop his movements. “I know. Of course, I know that. But he owed me, and now he's fucking dead so you’re the one that’s going to pay on that debt. So, I am going to fucking keep you and when the times comes, I’m going to be the one kill you. You don’t have anything waiting for you out there, and you know it.”
Finally, Dazai stills. He tries to formulate a response, but he's not stupid, and there's no denying the truth. Slowly, he nods, and from above him, Nakahara grins.

“Dazai, what the fuck is this?”
Brown eyes, still cloudy, peered up at him as if the words hadn’t even been comprehended in Dazai’s mind. His head cocked to the side in a silent question and Chuuya moved to push Dazai’s leg up a bit further, bringing it into the light so they could both see properly.
The near entirety of the skin was marred, of course, self-inflicted scars crisscrossing each other, old enough to have turned a faded white, but that wasn’t what he was focused on.
The issue lay in a series of fresh ones. They were scarily recent, probably only a few days old at best, and scabbed over. None looked bad enough to have needed stitches but they were pretty damn close.
Those hadn’t been there the last time they’d done this. In fact, nothing of the sort had been there any of the times they’d fucked since before Dazai left the Port Mafia.

In which Chuuya and Dazai have been having casual sex for years and all of that is fine until Dazai relapses for the first time since leaving the Port Mafia.
