By the time he's more than halfway through, leading Snow across the length of the arena once again in a tidy canter, he thinks to himself that barring any major slip-ups, he's almost guaranteed second place or higher – at least until something catches his eye in a very familiar fashion as before, a distraction that easily makes his stomach flip. Time seems to slow as he rides down the line, his eyes honing in on a bright red flame that stands out strong against the faded concrete wall lining the base of the bleachers, no longer hidden away beneath the brim of a faded and worn cowboy hat.
It's Reki – and he's staring right at him.

Reki was going to blow a fucking gasket. Or something like that. Either way, it would mark the end of his short and miserable monster-life. He could practically imagine the headlines now; Kyan Reki, 17, found dead in his childhood home. Cause of death: heart attack. His funeral would be a nice little affair, and if he was lucky, nobody would reanimate his corpse to laugh in his face over the pitiful cause of his demise.
All because he had a crush on his best friend.

“Nice to meet you, Langa.” He grins, feeling the mask stretch around his face with the intensity of it. “Could you, uh, be more careful crossing the road in the future? Or don’t, I guess. Saving you gives me something to do.” He laughs, rubbing the curve of his hand over his lips to press down a smile. Langa chuckles, then, soft and low, and Reki thinks he might die.
“Sorry,” Langa says, but he doesn’t really sound it. “Thank you, again.”
The superhero AU no one asked for, in which Reki is Spider-Man and Langa is ‘I love Spider-Man’-Man.

Summary

Summary
Reki has a secret. While everyone around him manifested a soul mark in early adolescence, his neck remained perfectly bare. Like most others his age, he keeps his neck covered, letting people assume he has a mark under the collar he wears daily. It's rare not to have one; Reki is pretty sure he's the only one in his school--maybe the only person in Okinawa--to be markless, and he plans to carry the burden of that truth to the grave.
Then the new boy shows up at school: Hasegawa Langa. He's a curious mix of unselfconscious, aloof, and oblivious. But most startlingly of all, he doesn't wear a collar. And his neck is just as markless as Reki's.
