Mike knows he’ll never fly. Not like Will. Because even when they’re both on the brink of death, when there’s literally no one around to judge him, when the whole world they’re in is about to blow up into oblivion, ending a years-long nightmare, ending them with it, he struggles to say it. He could never say it under normal circumstances. But he has so, so many regrets.
“I’m so sorry, Will. I know it wasn’t that serious to you. Just a crush. But still, it must’ve sucked. I’m sorry I didn’t realize sooner.

Summary
Short and Sweet: Trans Regulus fancies the pants off of James but it takes the two hopeless idiots years to finally admit it.
In Depth:
Regulus came out to Sirius when he was 11 years old, just before he was due to start at Hogwarts. Of course, panicking and needing to tell someone, Sirius writes to James. James and Sirius try and make it their mission to ensure that Regulus fits in, but it's more difficult than they realise. Not everyone is so accepting.
Chaos, inevitably, ensues. Featuring bisexual disaster, comphet James Potter. Featuring painfully gay Regulus Black, who uses intimacy as power and a coping mechanism. Featuring an exasperated Remus Lupin who doesn't understand how everyone else took so long to work out that James and Regulus should have just ended up together in the first place.
