When she opened her eyes, Ena was on her phone scrolling through Twitter.
Why is it always so hard with you? Mafuyu wanted to ask, but instead she opted for, “You were there when it happened. In my Sekai. With Kanade, the things we’ve promised each other, the things we’ve said to each other—sometimes those were the only things that kept us around. And now I don’t think I… I don’t know how to make sense of it.”
“And what. Are you saying you want to disappear again?” Ena’s voice dropped to a whisper. Her eyes hadn’t left her phone screen, but she wasn’t scrolling anymore.
“That does sound like the easier alternative than this.”
A quiet realization and a sudden confession send Asahina Mafuyu into a spiral. She can no longer afford to mindlessly allow herself to be swept along. But what is left for someone who believed, for so long, that she was an empty shadow of a person? With the future and everything that comes with it compounding, she is forced to confront her reality.

It’s a sleepless night at the start of Leo/need’s first tour, Shiho hasn’t been in the hotel room for a while now, and Ichika needs to do something, anything, with all this energy. Though different worries and thoughts lead both girls to sneak out for the night, neither are exactly sure of what they hope to find.

Summary
“What will it take for Mafuyu to be happy?”
In asking this question I realized the lens with which I would personally approach 25:00 at Nightcord’s canon story and themes. This is my own take on Mafuyu, and what needs to happen before she can reach a better state of mind.
What Comes After Death starts sometime after the “On This Blank Canvas, I Paint” event. There are some minor retcons done to the “Carnation Recollection”, “Mirage of Lights”, and “My Footprints, Your Destination” events, namely with how Kanade and Mafuyu’s relationship is portrayed and how Mizuki’s arc is handled. For a general timeline, Niigo’s main story takes place when Mafuyu is near the end of her first year in high school. This series diverges from canon around the end of the second year, and follows her through her third year and into college.
Please note that this series does not end with KanaMafu and MizuEna! Each part is tagged with the appropriate ships and content warnings.

The moment Mafuyu’s voice cut through the call, so casual and soft like it belonged there—like she belonged there—Ena’s heart clenched in a way she couldn’t ignore. It wasn’t anger. Not quite. Just that familiar sinking feeling that came every time she realized Mafuyu had pieces of herself that Ena couldn’t reach. That she trusted someone else with her quiet moments—someone who wasn’t her.
And it shouldn’t matter. It shouldn’t.
But it did.
