“I think it’s exactly what it looks like,” Hawks says with a tone Dabi’s never heard before, especially not directed at him. “I think you’ve taken the information I gave you to break into Endeavour’s house and steal from his dead child to taunt him.”
“It’s not,” Dabi says, and he knows that he can't possibly explain this to him without telling him the truth.
Or: Dabi revisits the Todoroki residence to take some of his old things back for himself, and gets caught by Hawks, who spots him coming out of the window.

Even though they’re the only ones in his apartment, Hawks shuts the door behind him to give them both a sense of privacy. So Dabi knows it’s just them, just Hawks and him. It’s just Hawks who's going to see him like this, shaking where he’s sat up against the wall, his head in his hands as he trembles. Nothing will ever leave this room.
Nobody’s going to know he asked for help and nobody’s going to know he asked for help from Hawks.

If he pulls his hair over his eyes far enough to see it he’s afraid it might be red, more afraid it might be white; if it’s not black he won’t know who he is, whether he’s Dabi or Touya or something else entirely, curled up around his own knees with his bare feet dangling over the ledge of the pier, so he holds his bangs away from his forehead and promises himself that he won’t look until he’s sure it’s safe enough to fall apart if he’s wrong.

Shaking the memory from his mind, Dabi turned his attention back to the little bird, who was now threading apart his hair as if he were looking for something. "What're ya doin'? Ya said something about white."
Instead of retreating or even looking away, Hawks nodded, scraping his fingernails along Dabi's scalp. The villain shuddered at the sensation, a heat rising to his face at the strangely intimate gesture. "Your roots are coming in," he said quietly, more so than he ever had been. He looked over to the cyan eyes that were watching him, hooded gold refusing to look away. "Your hair's white."
