At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

“Why? Why won’t you ever tell me what’s wrong with you?” Carlton’s voice is filled with frustration, and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to Will.
What is wrong with him. It’s such a loaded question. Why does Will wake up screaming sometimes? Why can’t Will handle the cold? Why are there days when Carlton’s hands on him feel like being kept under water with no way up?
And why can’t Will tell Carlton the truth? How could Will possibly explain it without sounding insane? What is the human translation for being taken and kept in another dimension, violated, and possessed, only to then be violated yet again—
This part of him is something Will is never going to be able to share with anyone else. That nobody would understand.
Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong with you.
“Because you wouldn’t get it.” Will somehow manages to say it without gagging.
And then, Carlton goes in for the kill.
“Oh, but Mike does?”

“No, no. I don’t have a girlfriend,” he says. The Party continues to stare at him. Will looks down at the table, biting nervously at the inside of his cheek. There is a flash of something on his face, as if something in him has shifted. He continues his contemplation for a bit, and as Mike is about to speak up to once again tell his friends to lay off, Will breaks the silence:
“Do you guys know Chance?”
or; In which Mike and Will navigate the line between best friends and ex-boyfriends just fine, until little love notes start appearing in Will’s locker and Mike is forced to confront the feelings that come with them.
