On the TV, the away team scored a beautiful service ace, one that even Atsumu would be proud of. The ball shot like a bullet to strike their opponents’ setter, blasting into his forearms then shooting off out of bounds. Perfect strategy, perfect execution.
Atsumu winced. Another can of beer stared at him from the table.
“No, but I am way too fuckin’ sober for this kinda conversation,” he complained, rubbing his eyes.
Once, Atsumu held an unchallenged spot at the top. Now, he’s on the bench with a younger replacement standing in the middle of his path to glory. He makes his own life complicated, then finds some peace of mind in an unexpected place.
