“You are here?” Ilya practically whispers the words. This cannot be real. Shane is in Buffalo. Shane has practice in the morning and a game in two days. There is no logical way he can be in Ilya’s living room at three am.
Shane slides his thumb soothingly over Ilya’s knee. “I’m here.”
“How?” Ilya’s voice breaks, still not quite believing that this is real.
“I rented a car and drove. I left as soon as we got off the phone.”
When Ilya is badly injured on the ice, nothing will keep Shane away from him.

It was no question 2017 was the best year of Shane’s life, which is hilarious seeing as he ended that season benched with a concussion and damaged collarbone, but he had Ilya.
Ilya waking up next to him, cooking with him, swimming, and joking, and loving him.
A year. A beautiful, messy, perfect year with Ilya was all he had before he had fucked it all up.
Or, Shane breaks up with Ilya before TLG and regrets it. When Ilya is inducted into the Hall of Fame, it’s Shane that has to give him his award.

“You don’t look at me like I am crazy.” Ilya says, voice barely above a breath.
Shane’s brow furrows. “Because you’re not.”
“I feel like I am.”
Shane’s hand comes up to cradle his jaw. Warm palm with gentle pressure on his skin. “You look like someone doing something hard.” Something in Ilya’s chest cracks open again, but softer this time.
(ie. ilya has a very rough day at therapy and comes home to shane to process it all and feel comfort)
