Bookmarker's Notes
I find myself reading this over and over again. The poetry is wonderful - evocative, rich, playful and musical. I think I especially like the first "song." The words practically beg to be chanted, and I love the idea of Janet rescuing Margaret's child, and the story going on.

Summary
There is another garden, in India. These are the women of that garden, over two generations, Mary's mother and ayah, and both their two daughters. In the end, I'm afraid, this is only where the story begins, but I hope it opens up the original story and takes us out into the world beyond the secret gardens.
I'm afraid the closest I've been to India is the websites I used researching this, so if there are any glaring botanical, linguistic or cultural errors, let me know and I'll fix them.
