    Summary

Francis Crozier faced a peculiar problem as of late. It was not that he had taken rooms with his previous second in command upon their miraculous return from the Arctic. Nor was it that Francis’s feelings for the handsome, newly minted Captain Fitzjames made their cohabitation somewhat trying on occasion. It was not even that James Fitzjames was a vampire, and all the dangers one might assume that fact would carry.
    Although it was related.

Dakin gabbled on, willing himself to stop, “Look, it got out of hand. I changed my mind. I tried to leave, and… let’s just say he didn’t like it. He knocked me about a bit, gave me a fat lip, then he threw me out anyway.”

“Ah,” said Irwin, “You went home with Dr Jekyll, and you got Mr Hyde. You should be more careful on a night like this.”

    Summary

James is staring openly, unable to unpin his sight from the four metal beads visible through Francis’s shirt. Just an hour ago, at most, some fortunate piercer was grasping his nipples—the same nipples James greedily licks and bites and sucks at every opportunity—with surgical-gloved hands, and then forcing through a thick metal needle in a stinging instant. He would have liked to hear Francis suck in air through his teeth, to weather the pain; he would have liked to watch the piercer extract the needle and insert the jewelry in single practiced move; he would have liked to watch them rake their eyes over Francis’s thick torso afterward and think, He’s mine

    Summary

It’s the autumn of 1847, and the crew of the Franklin expedition is bracing for their third winter in the Arctic. But a strange superstition has begun making its way around the ships: that the solution to all their problems is a particular magic ritual called a “ships-marriage,” which would require the captain of Erebus and the captain of Terror to be joined in holy matrimony.

    Summary

Crozier foolishly believed that the first Magpie case he was consulted on would be solved by the time supper was ready. He swept into Sir John Barrow’s opulent home, been directed to the man’s private collection, observed the empty space where prized swords once hung, the letter pinned in their place, the feather that had fallen to the floor.
“You’re not looking for a magpie, gentleman,” he announced in that tone which had prevented his advancement at Scotland Yard ) as he held the feather between his thumb and forefinger. “You’re looking for a peacock.”

The Magpie, dashing gentleman thief, has been running rampant all over London, robbing society of their treasures and delighting the masses with his daring and charm.

Private Detective Francis Crozier intends to stop him.
