Will Byers has never known anything but the walls of his tower, the rustling of distant trees, and the sky he spends his days drawing without ever being able to touch it. Mike Wheeler, on the other hand, has never known anything but the weight of a name too big for him and a crown he doesn't want to wear. Heir to the throne, son of Ted and Karen, chronic runaway, he chases after something he couldn't name, and he runs fast.
Fast enough to find himself, one day, climbing into a tower he was never meant to find.
Two boys with nothing in common. A forest between them and the rest of the world. And every year, thousands of golden lanterns rising silently into the sky, neither of them yet understanding what those lights are trying to say.

It reminds her of the note, still sitting innocently atop her dresser. Max hardly gives herself the time to second-guess; she’s flipping through the channels again.
When she finds it, she hisses into the mic, “Wheeler, wake up, over.”
Nothing. She tries again.
“Mike, wake up, it’s Max.”
Still nothing.
“Mike, please wake up, please—“
“Wha— Max what the fuck?” a groggy voice finally crackles through the line.
Max sighs, relieved.
“Finally, oh my god,” she breathes out, resting her head back against her pillow.
