The hands drop from his collar and move to encircle him in a desperate hold, a heavy weight slumps into him and Mikey rests his head on the slope of Takemichi’s shoulder. Fingers dig into his back almost painfully. “My birthday is tomorrow Takemitchy, you’ll stay for it, right?”
He doesn’t comment on the wetness that cools his skin, instead choosing to simply bring his arms around Mikey too, holding him close. “I wish I could, really, but I think it’s almost time for me to get going.” He chuckles, quiet and friendly, and Mikey kind of hates him for how okay he is with all of this — with dying. “I’ve got pretty bad timing, sorry.”

Takemichi is 14 when he first meets Mikey in middle school. He has another first meeting with him when he’s 26. Mikey is 10. And while this doesn’t drastically change anything, it shifts the course of their lives ever so slightly to the left.
(It’s surprising in the beginning, but he learns to adapt after the second time it happens.)

He had sighed in almost frustration — he was hungry, for one thing —, then had carefully put the small plate down on the wooden table, making sure not to spill its terrifyingly hot content on the floor, or worse, on himself.
