"I'm fine, Kakashi." The lie slips easily from his tongue. "I suppose I haven't regained my full control of my strength just yet. My hand…" He holds it out in front of him to show Kakashi the trembling of his fingers. Kakashi breathes a sigh, now close enough to touch.
"I see," he says, reaching out with his own two hands to calm the tremors. The shock of his palms against Obito's skin nearly causes him to drop the act right then and there.
You don't see anything, he wants to say, the words simmering in his suddenly tight throat.
But he doesn't, because he's Obito Uchiha. And that eye-opening realization has transformed his tiny world, ripped away any shred of comfort he could have dug from this isolated shack and its strangely familiar caretaker. In just a few devastating heartbeats, he's found himself in the middle of the lion's den, powerless and without an ally in sight.

For two years, since Obito came back to him, alive; or maybe twenty, back when his left side burned with an eye that he never felt worthy of; or maybe even twenty-eight, when he graduated from the academy and he looked back for the first and last time, blinking at blindingly orange goggles; or maybe it has never belonged to him, fate already pulling his strings before he could draw his first breath.
Or, getting together may be a journey but Obito and Kakashi will get there — eventually. Now, if they could hurry up and do it with less drama Team 7 wouldn't feel the need to push their heads together (which they won't do, for now.)
