Summary
The snow smells different here.
It’s the first thing Ilya thinks when he exits the airport terminal onto the street, the flakes falling thick and heavy from the late evening sky. Is the altitude different from Boston? The temperature? The pollutants? Maybe it’s the cigarettes—he can pick up the distinct smoky vanilla of Chapmans from the guy on the corner, harder to get in the US, and his fingers itch to light up something himself. Whatever it is, he hasn’t smelled it in years.
Ever since Sochi, he’d only had summers in Russia.
After his father's death, Ilya returns to Moscow to pick up the pieces of what's left of his family, only to find that his grief encompasses more than he ever expected. A look into Ilya, Russia, and the inexplicable meaning of home.

Summary
It starts, like any good small talk does, about the weather.
Jane. I am dying.
Shane is still in bed, spending his last hour before practice clicking endlessly through YouTube when he gets the notification. With no one there to see, he lets the smile settle comfortably as it spreads, and switches apps. He’s about to shoot down Ilya’s latest attempt at desperate seduction when another text arrives.
I will play next game with no feet because cold took them.
This... was new.
Shane expects texts from Ilya to bring him to his knees. They do, but in another way instead.

Summary
Shane Hollander was five years old when he played his first game. Seven when his parents took serious notice of his skills, eight when his city did. Eleven when he made his first headline, and by the time he was fourteen, the whole country had its eyes on him.
Shane Hollander was a teenage phenom; a miracle to watch; a new vision for the league.
No one ever asked Shane what he wanted for his future. They all just saw it, right in front of them, every time he went out on the ice.
Shane Hollander vs. Shane, the real self vs. the celebrity, and Ilya Rozanov, who sees past it all.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov, over the years, as seen through the eyes of the people of Boston.
A tall man in a heavy coat stops by their house’s fence, falling to a level squat and holding the back of his fingers through the slats like an offering. And there’s Mocha, her skittish Siamese, going right up to him. The cat Ashley’s had since she was a teenager, who hates strangers, who ran even from her little brother during that first year, shoving the flat of her head against this man’s hand and turning around so he can pet along her outstretched spine. In his other hand, there’s a cigarette. He pulls at it periodically, turning his head from the wind and blowing the smoke away from Mocha.
“What the fuck?” she says aloud.

Summary
Lily: need a bedtime story?
Jane: Fuck you.
Jane: Yes.
Lily: why don’t you ask your girlfriend this time?
Shane’s typing bubble pops in and out again, the way he does when he’s overthinking a message. That alone is enough confirmation for Ilya to get half-hard.
Jane: Maybe I will.
Lily: say hi for me
Rose is Hollywood’s favourite doll. Shane likes to organize his toys by shape and colour. And Ilya’s never been good at sharing.
(Or: Instead of breaking up, Shane and Rose become each other’s beards.)
