He gets home and his father is angry. That's the norm, so Ilya barely even cares to notice it, except his father is really angry. He doesn't like that Ilya was out all day. He's pacing the room in circles around Ilya, interrogating him on why he's home so late, and Ilya wants to roll his eyes.
You want me to play in the KHL, yes? Then I need to practice.
The answer was bullshit, for many reasons. Grigori Rozanov didn't know it yet, but Ilya would never play a single KHL game. At least, he hoped not. If things went the way Ilya wanted them to, he'd be drafted to the NHL in 2009, and he'd move to America, and he'd have money and fame and he'd never have to think about this godawful place again.
He only wishes he could bring his mother with him.

“I would like to see you try,” he said, while Shane pretended he was invisible.
“Then keep being a dick on this airplane,” he said, and fuck, that got another look.
“You might fit in one,” Ilya went on, thoughtfully looking into the compartment. “Since you are pocket-sized.”
“We’re about to be on a plane flight together for eight hours and this is how you kick things off?”
“You are stuck with me for much longer than that,” Ilya said, and kissed Shane on the cheek.

A decade later, Shane is a violinist for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Ilya is the lead singer and guitarist of "Roz and the Centaurs." When Ilya's band seeks a violinist to join them on tour, Shane reluctantly auditions and gets the position.
When Ilya and Shane are photographed drinking together at a bar, the press incorrectly assumes they are dating. Pretending they are in a relationship could boost Shane's profile and mend Ilya's scandal-ridden image, but is it really a good idea?

This Mermaid AU was inspired by MIA Archer's wonderful mershane art and our collective spiral spiral over it on Discord. (Art embedded in the fic with the permission of the artist)
Ilya has spent the past 2 years away from his home country of Morya after his father, Tsar Grigori, forced him onto a ship and sent him to the other side of the sea. Now, he is returning home.
Shane is Mer-man who is able to shift between Mer and Human form. He has been assigned to keep an eye on Ilya as tensions escalate between Morya and the Mer.
While this fic pulls several plot elements and titles from Disney's The Little Mermaid, it is not a retelling. Lets call it a remix.
This fic will be a total of five chapters (a prologue and 4 parts). I expect it to be around ~10-12k words when completed.
