Summary
At least they were safe now, as they launched themselves into the dark. At least he could see Lucy’s form, a midnight-blue spot in his peripheral vision, alive and herself and probably angry at him, but alive nonetheless. That was all that mattered.
And then there was the gunshot that ripped through the sky, the sudden squelch of flesh as a bullet lodged itself in her back, and her choked gasp.

“I thought you wanted to dance.”
Lucy's words come out more softly than she intended, pointedly regarding their static position. Lockwood’s left hand is clasped loosely around her right, his other hand barely ghosting her middle, giving her the chance to break away if she wants to. And he’s still staring down at her, usual mischievous glint in his eye replaced with a tenderness that makes her feel like she’s intruding on his heart.
She doesn’t want to unpack the sudden lurch in her chest.

Summary
The Christmas holiday actually went relatively well for how low of expectations Lucy seemed to have. Celebrating by himself felt hollow, like he was throwing a pity party with the ghosts of his past. Before George he’d just tried to ignore it. With George the year before, they’d had dinner, exchanged gifts, and that was the extent of it. With Lucy, there was now a purpose.
Lockwood and Co. wrap up their Christmas celebration. Lockwood learns more about Lucy's life before the agency and ruminates on his feelings after Combe Carey Hall.

He would stand up, walk over to her, welcome her, then introduce Holly and apologize for her sitting in Lucy's place without prior notice, he would tell her he had been trying to reach her to share the good news, and that of course, they valued her opinion in the hiring process, but they had been under a lot of time pressure, an unforeseen sequence of events, and Lucy would then say -
"This is a time for introductions! Holly, this is Lucy Carlyle, the perfect Agent, whom you've heard so much about. And Lucy, let me introduce you to Holly Munro, our new assistant."
