“Uh.. my name’s Megumi Fushiguro,” Megumi says, avoiding eye contact with the boy. Not that he has anything against eye contact, but this boy’s eyes are too wide. It feels like he’s staring into Megumi’s soul.

It was another one of those nights. Those nights where all Yuuji sees is Megumi, Megumi who he loved—loves. Megumi who is covered in these wretched marks, Megumi who drowns in this seemingly black emptiness. Megumi who screams and reaches out for anything to grasp onto as the darkness drowns out any cries for help in this dream. Yuuji doesn't really know what the dream means.

“You’re thinking too loud. What’s going on in that head of yours?”
“Can we get married?” Yuji asked. Megumi’s brain stuttered, and his hands felt clammy under Yuji’s touch. The words hit him like a rogue freight train, smashing into the deepest parts of him.
“Married?”
“You know, the legal union of two people who love each other?”
“I know what marriage is, idiot.” His breaths came out in gasps. “Why are you saying we should get married?”
“I just- Oh god. Did I mess everything up? I forgot that you might not love me back. I’m sorry—I’m so sorry—Megumi. Forget I said anything.” He took his head off Megumi’s shoulder, and the cold that hit him was sharp. It creeped through his uniform and made home on the skin Yuji had warmed. His hand went with him, crossing his arms in front of his chest like it was to protect him from something. Like his heart would break if he didn’t hold it in place.

Yuji’s steps were heavy as he walked the beach alone.
It’s emptier than he expects. The air was cooling, brushing his hair gently, ruffling the longer strands, blowing in his eyes. It’s cold, the kind of chill that settles into the sand and stays there. The sky is pale, dark, hazy swirls of blue, darker clouds spiral around, and the moon casts a shine on the dark water.
The blue reminds him.
Or: Yuji remembers. Megumi stays, just not in the way he wants.
