Summary
Two years after Dazai's death, Chuuya is the Boss of the Port Mafia, and things are going as well as anyone can expect. Until they're not.
"What--?" Chuuya manages, the word thick and throaty, too wet, too obvious. He blinks: what he's seeing doesn't change.
"Chuuya-kun, please come in," Mori says, conversationally. "If you could close the door behind him, Dazai-kun."
Chuuya's head whips around; Mori at the desk had been enough of a shock, but Dazai, curled up lazily in an armchair with a book, looking like a petulant housecat as he stands up, still covered in bandages with one eye visible, is enough to make Chuuya feel almost nauseated.
"Chuuya," Dazai says, the word a sing-song and nothing like the monotone way he'd said it when he was the Boss, "come on."

Summary
The guards grab Dazai, and he relaxes his body to prevent the injuries that tensing up would give him. Dazai feels his ability try to activate: it stutters and fades away almost immediately, the vampirism a symptom and not the root of the problem, and Bram Stoker several thousand miles away.
"If you're anticipating that this will stop me–" Dazai begins, and Dostoyevsky cuts him off with an easy smile.
"I don't need to stop you. Merely delay you further," Dostoyevsky says, voice easy and sweet. "They'll stop you in whatever way they see fit, although I don't know that violence is their preferred method. Since they can't subdue you simply by turning you…"
Dazai's smile comes out more of a grimace, he's certain. "You're an even nastier fellow than you let on, you know."

Summary
"Who disturbs my slumber?" a voice booms out, into the water, very clearly able to be heard, which isn't how the physics of sound and water work, but that's a problem for later, because Dazai recognizes the voice instantly.
"Why are you sleeping in the Yokohama harbor?!" Dazai says, back, wasting most of the rest of his oxygen as he swims backwards several feet. Of course, for Dazai, the words just come out as a vague series of muffled sounds and air bubbles.
Despite Dazai moving backwards, the tentacle he'd been touching – because that's undeniably what it is – snaps out quicker than Dazai can track in the dark water, wrapping around his waist and pulling him closer.
Lovecraft frowns. "I have seen your face before."

Summary
Dazai allows himself to be kidnapped. It's a very planned maneuver. Kunikida was against it, but he was overruled; even Ranpo agreed that it was safe, the group in question hardly skilled enough to give Dazai any difficulty. Dazai goes in fully prepared to pick the lock of his restraints with one of the several paperclips he has hidden on himself, with a clearly scheduled pick-up time and an even more clearly laid out counter-interrogation plan.
Except then they handcuff Dazai and raise his arms behind him, and he completely blanks out. They're not even trying to dislocate his arms; they just did things out of order and needed his arms behind the back of the chair, and they haven't found even half of Dazai's get-out-of-handcuffs-free tricks, and none of that matters, because Dazai blanks out. His ears buzz. The room, dingy and dimly lit, feels bright. He feels like he can't breathe.
Oh, he realizes, faintly. I'm going to have a panic attack.
Which is fascinating, on some level, because he's never had one before.

Summary
“Chuuya,” Dazai says, placatingly. “I didn’t—”
“You didn’t what, Dazai?” Chuuya snaps. There’s too much tension in his frame. He’s holding back with enormous effort. “You didn’t sneak into my apartment to meddle with something when you heard I was sick?”
Dazai had, in fact, broken in because he’d heard Chuuya was sick, and he wanted to change some (but not all) of his wine into vinegar, so Chuuya would never know which one he was getting until he uncorked it –
“I thought you were sick,” Dazai says, stressing the word. Everyone had acted like it was the flu. Dazai thought it was the flu. Chuuya’d already had his rut months ago, he wasn’t due for another until –
Unless –
“Corruption,” Dazai breathes out, too many pieces slotting together too quickly.
“Yeah,” Chuuya says. “Boss says there’s no way to tell if it’ll trigger every time or not.”

Summary
First: Dazai is hit. Not by the enemy – some scrub with an ability to move non-living objects from one visualized space to another; convenient for robbing banks and mafia storehouses both – but by something heavy, invisible, and cloying.
Second: In an instant, Dazai relives someone else's life.
Third: And their death.
Third Point Five: Suicide, he supposes he should amend, if he's being fair.
Fourth: Dazai, for all his intellect, cannot quite recover quickly enough from the onslaught of thoughts and memories that bombard him like a series of bullets he's unable to deflect. He can compartmentalize them in a fraction of the time it would take most people, but it's still long enough for the ability user to get in a clean hit. A pole materializes squarely inside Dazai's abdomen, and his ability flares up too late, and the pain immediately makes him vomit.
Fifth: On, thankfully, the ability user.
So Dazai has that going for him, he supposes.

"Bestie!" Nikolai chirps, draping herself over Fyodor without any preamble. "You're saving your first dance for me, right?"
"You're late," Fyodor says, easily.
"It hasn't started," Nikolai replies, offering Fyodor her best pout and knowing that it will have absolutely no effect on the girl.
"We can all dance together," Dazai says, offering one hand to each of them. "I'm certain I can lead two beautiful women as well as I can lead one."

"Coffee?" Higuchi blurts, before she can stop herself.
"I like tea," Gin says, softly, "but I've found that for long missions, a bold coffee brew is the best companion."
"Oh," Higuchi says. She wilts a little. She can't get Akutagawa coffee. She doesn't know anything about coffee.

Summary
"The next twelve hours," Mori says, his voice completely detached from the situation, no hints of the boss of the Port Mafia or a father figure or a doting doctor, everything carefully excised until only the cadence of an army surgeon is left, "will determine whether or not he pulls through."
"What," Dazai says, sounding like he's a thousand miles away, "are his chances?"
Mori doesn't say anything.
Dazai hangs up.

Summary
“Stop moving,” Saguru instructs, tightening his suit jacket around Kid’s shoulder until he’s certain it’ll hold for a few seconds. He steps away, turning his eyes away from Kid for a split second before he thinks the better of it. “If you run away and bleed all over London, I’m not helping hide a single bit of the evidence.”
“So,” Kid says, slowly, swallowing down the laughter but not managing to remove it from his voice. “You’re going to help hide the evidence if I don’t bleed all over London?”
“Well,” Saguru responds, turning his back again. “If you don’t run away, at least.”

Summary
The blindfold, Dazai thinks, is the important part. It was the first thing Chuuya had done, pushing Dazai down until he was on his knees and then tying it securely around Dazai's head. Dazai's fingers thrum with an anxious, panicked energy; the desire to rip it off and immediately jump out of the window of Chuuya's very nice, very high-rise apartment.
He doesn't.
"This is the craziest thing you've ever had us do," Chuuya says, quietly, his gloved fingertips under Dazai's jaw. "And that's saying something."
"It's about trust," Dazai replies, with a lightness he doesn't feel. "It's just not something either of us want on display very often. You were the one who said I needed to teach them better."
"Right," Chuuya snorts, and then raises his voice. "You can come in."
or; "Dazai and Chuuya have deranged sex to show Atsushi and Akutagawa how deranged sex can be done properly."

Summary
"I'm here for something else," Atsushi says, and he can't keep the guilt out of his voice, that he isn't just here for Kyouka's sake. Kouyou's hum is judgemental, but allowing, so Atsushi plunges ahead: "Nakahara needs our help, so–"
Kouyou whirls back around. This time, her eyes are wide in surprise, and Atsushi reflexively takes a step back, because surprise in the mafia isn't far from anger. "Chuuya is dead."
"He's– in the basement of the special division," Atsushi says, too quickly. "They – they want us to break him out."
"They who?" Kouyou demands.
In which:
Dazai is dead (probably),
Chuuya can't control his powers (presumably),
Atsushi is doing alright, actually (allegedly),
Fukuzawa did not sign up for any of this (unequivocally),
and,
Mori is still running an orphanage and not involved in any of this (definitely). -

Summary
"It's snowing," Sigma says. Dazai stares at her. Dazai stares at her for an extra minute. It's just to buy time, really – Dazai has already parsed the gist of the situation, but she knows that keeping up appearances is half of any social interaction, and she rather wants to continue sitting there napping under the kotatsu while she's still young enough that her back doesn't hurt from curling up like a shrimp.
"It does that," Dazai offers, and then thinks very hard about various animals yawning until her body kicks the reflex in. Always better to do a real yawn instead of a fake one, if you can manage it.
"I've never," Sigma says, carefully, "been out in the snow while it's snowing."

Summary
"Generally speaking," Dazai says, and he doesn't sound anything like the Dazai that Chuuya knows, "I can't imagine I'd go through the effort of faking my death when dying is both easier to achieve and more of a pleasant experience. Though it depends on the how and the why, of course."
"Bastard, stop talking in circles and–"
"Boss, huh?" Dazai says, and Chuuya breaks off. It sounds wrong, from Dazai, and Chuuya lets Dazai go. Dazai drops down to both knees, and then sits there, gazing past Chuuya and looking at the makeshift shrine on the imposing wooden desk. There's something dark in his gaze, and it's almost comforting. Almost, because it's familiar; it's a knife in the darkness that Chuuya has watched bring down hundreds of people.
"What," Chuuya snaps. "Going to tell me you want the position back?"
"Back," Dazai murmurs, drumming his fingers on his knees before he finally climbs back up to his feet. His hands go into his pockets, his posture relaxed and easy, and none of it makes any sense. "Chuuya, was I really?"

Summary
"My feet're… bad," Tachihara says, but he shuffles obediently forward. His every step is done in slow motion, each one a beleaguered movement, but he continues moving again. "They're sooo bad, but you're so nice… you smell really nice, too…"
"That's the soap from the bar," Higuchi says. She'd like to think she says it patiently, but she knows that patience is already on a one-way overseas flight, never to return. "I washed my shirt in the sink."
"Oh," Tachihara says. He pauses, because thinking and walking are currently two actions that cannot be undertaken at the same time, and peers at her face. "Sorry. That was my fault. I can buy you a new shirt."
"Please," Higuchi says, and her voice cracks a little in sheer desperation as she hauls Tachihara's arm a little more firmly around her shoulders to keep him steady, "please just keep walking."

"This is a haunted house," Fukuzawa says, his voice flat.
"Allegedly," Mori chirps. He leans into the camera frame, hands full as he loads an instant camera with batteries, then he leans back out as he watches Yosano adjust the zoom. "Allegedly haunted."
"Don't throw out your back," Yosano says, voice dry. "I'm not helping with any self-inflicted wounds. Only ghost-inflicted wounds."
"Alleged ghosts," Mori offers.

Summary
Chuuya's body temporarily gives out under the strain of Corruption pushed too far, and Dazai has to deposit him on Mori's desk in a rush while Chuuya's erratic pulse threatens to beat itself out entirely.
It does stop beating–
– and Dazai's heart stops beating, too –
– and then everything starts back up again, under Mori's scalpel and the medical team, and Dazai can't make sense of the words he hears. Concussion and soul tie and shared death, and all of it makes Dazai's heart beat so loudly in his ears that he ignores the words entirely.

"Ah, Chuuya, I'm out of ammo again!" Dazai wails, and he wiggles like a cooked noodle, limbs everywhere, while remaining laser focused on the screen.
"Then get behind me, dumbass!" Chuuya snaps, like it's a real battle and they're not just controlling characters on the screen. It's easy; it's simple. The two of them slot perfectly into place as rivals – as teammates – as partners.

"I think it's an aphrodisiac," Maomao says, with an enormous, long-suffering sigh.
"What."
"I'd be hard pressed to tell you exactly what it wants," Maomao says. "It could be our body heat, or the plant itself could be sensitive to something released only during sex–"
"What."
"--but based on the fact that there's no animal or human corpses in here, I imagine it's going to let us go once it's had a meal."
"Are you saying," Jinshi says, very carefully, "that the plant wants us to–"
"Don't finish that sentence, sir," Maomao says, holding up a hand. "I don't know if the plant realizes it has two people."

Summary
this fic should leave you feeling empty inside after you read it, and you should have the desire to stare at the wall and then send me angry comments. you have been forewarned. there is no happiness here!
anyway, multi-chapter dostoy/dazai fic written for bottom dazai week 2024.
"You're pathetic," Dostoyevsky offers. It's a light, conversational tone: it sounds like it should be a comment on the weather given over high tea. But Dostoyevsky isn't surrounded by finger sandwiches and delicate scones– he's surrounded by the dark, muddled air of the room Dazai has been rotting in.
