    Summary

He could taste it on his tongue, the salty tang of the sea, fresher and somehow saltier than the sea he knew. He could feel the sand, soft and light underfoot, warm from the sun. 'Sam,' the voice had said, saying his name so tenderly, so carefully, as if it were something precious, something to be treasured. 'Oh, Sam. I’ll wait for you.'

Samwise Mason is a junior member of the Stonemason's Guild of Haven City; he works hard, but doesn't stand out. He dreams, again and again, of a beach with white sand and a kiss goodbye. Samwise Mason is making a statue.

    Summary

It became, he realised quickly, pervasive. All the tiny things which had not been prepared when the Wisdom of Choharo had crashed had now finally trundled through the pipeline, almost a year on. The new coins fully entered circulation, which was protocol. Papers and documents were properly headed with the new imperial seal, which was protocol; Varenechibel's portrait in Beltanthiar IV’s atrium, the formal centrepoint of court, was replaced with Edrehasivar’s, which was protocol. It did not take Setheris a long look to know it was a petulantly good likeness, devoid of all the tiny vanities his predecessors had snuck in; although Setheris was convinced it was painted so the pallid eyes followed you.

    Summary

Beatrice finds herself musing not over duty and sacrifice and God, but the truth of angels, if they can be created rather than summoned. If they can take the form of women with overeager mouths and careless limbs and eyes with a depth that beckons - a crooked finger, a spiral staircase - if they can be both human and not, both beautiful and terrifying.

Ava asks, What do you want, Beatrice?

(Tell me and I’ll give it to you. Tell me and I’ll build you a home there. Tell me and I’ll rearrange the universe to make it all fit, angels and demons be damned. Tell me it’s me. Me. Me.)

    Summary

“Dear Maia,” said Csethiro, amused. “Lack of presumption, thy name is Edrehasivar. Well, we are sorry for the faux pas. Have no fear, we are used to keeping quiet on the matter.” She frowned. “Gosh. For a woman who was so worried you disliked us, we are certainly giving you plenty of reasons, in our attempts to diffuse the situation. Damnation.” She sat back, then said, “Ooh, Goëlar,” and sat forwards again. “You have the set! And well-read, we dare say, how impressive…”
The woman's mind was like a scanning bird of prey, Csevet thought exhaustedly as she tottered out of the chair to look at his bookshelf. Pinned one topic and only let it go when it was in its death throes, then leapt instantly off to murder another.

(csevet and csethiro have three main things in common: pakh'palar, popular literature, and purpose. not necessarily in that order.)

"You would have done better to choose a daughter of a more traditional house," Osmerrem Pashavaran said. 'The Ceredada girls have just as many ridiculous notions as your sister."

(the daughters of the Marquess Ceredel certainly do have notions)
