The officer standing in front of the prisoner nods his head at her, "You must be, Miss Howard, the student teacher. Hope that are prepared to handle these animals." He lightly nods his head backwards to the prisoner behind him.
She gives him a curt smile in acknowledgment but can't find her words to respond.
Lexi knows that she should follow the same advice that was given to the prisoner. Keep your eyes down . But she doesn't.
She lets her eyes flit up briefly to catch the icy blue of his eyes glaring through her. She lets her chestnut waves fall in front of her face, only allowing for a small window of her eyes to be visible to him. It’s her only shield from his attention.
Just before she goes to pass him, he slightly cocks his head to the side, one corner of his mouth pulling into the most subtle smirk that none of the guards catch. Or maybe they do, but they don’t care. She feels exposed, as if he is hearing the frantic beating of her heart and feeling the chill crawling up her skin through just his glare.
