"There has gotta be a better way to do this. That was awful," Mike said, turning to Will, voice hoarse and deeper than usual. Will continued rubbing Mike's back as he thought about Mike's words.
Will did know of a better way, but he was certain they shouldn't do it.
"Will?" Mike began, eyes flitting between Will's, causing Will's eyes to snap to his. "What? Is there actually a better way?"
Will hesitated at the inquiry. "Yeah- Yeah, sorry, but we can't do it."
"Why not?" Mike asked, looking confused, keeping his eyes locked onto Will's.
Will averted his eyes. "It might be too weird. It's kinda… intimate?" Will said, making it sound almost like a question.
Mike nodded thoughtfully, thinking about it for a moment before saying, "We can do it anyway, if you want. I don't mind. I trust you, Will."

Summary
“Friends don’t lie?” It’s a callback, an ancient one, a pinky-promise made between two children at the dead of night, one passed on to their other friends, one that hasn’t been followed for a long time.
“Yeah. Yeah, friends don’t lie. I promise I won’t,” Mike vows, holding onto Will impossibly tighter, like he can speak it into being.
“Okay,” Will whispers, sounding suspiciously choked up. Sad with a resigned longing that Mike doesn’t know how to soothe. “I promise, too.”

After the Byers' move into the Wheeler house and Will starts sleeping in the basement, Mike can't stop himself from hovering at the top of the stairs every time he has a nightmare. With a few bumps along the way, this somehow culminates in a whole lot of cuddling and a hell of a lot more personal introspection.

Will lately hasn’t been acting like usual. He’s more quiet, more annoyed, like something happened, but it’s just in his head, right? His mind is filled with nightmares – a lot of them. He doesn’t want to admit it, but there are a lot more problems going on in his head and, of course – his heart. One night changes everything. Could his love for Mike only make this worse? Or will everything be the other way around, and love will defeat the fear, making both of them happy?
