He used to know his work schedule down to the hour, down to the minute. That was before he started having to be up at dawn and staying out past midnight chasing a damn teenager around town. Now Qiu is too busy to do much with He Cheng besides say good morning and good night.
A thought occurs to him. Maybe this weekend is as much of a break for Qiu as it is for He Cheng. He decides not to question him.
“A date, then?”
He Cheng looks amused, “It seems only fair. You have been working a difficult job.”

Qiu doesn’t show any outward signs of the loss, but He Cheng can see it in the way he smokes more cigarettes and keeps reaching for a pair of furry ears to scratch that aren’t there. He can see it in the way he sleeps with his legs moved to the side leaving a space at the bottom of the bed open. He can see in the way after he makes himself breakfast he opens the cabinet below the counter for a nonexistent bag of kibble.
He can see it in the corner of the living room, a dog bed sitting innocently with toys and a leash piled on top, still not taken out of the apartment.
He Cheng doesn’t bring it up.
