    Summary

With a heavy sigh, Kaveh buried his face in his pillow. All of his romantic ideals, as usual, were quashed by the one man he actually yearned for such affections from - a marriage for the sake of fucking tax deductions.

Though it made sense in a cold, rational way, such a logical and disinterested proposal for Kaveh to willingly sacrifice his heart for nothing more than mora cut deep into his chest. And worst of all... Alhaitham was unaware that Kaveh’s heart could never even belong to anyone but him - that he was already the sole benefactor of Kaveh’s silent longing, having stolen Kaveh’s heart against his will long ago.

Kaveh curled around his pillow as if the soft cotton of his pillowcase could offer a reprieve from the turmoil churning deep in his stomach. He’d long since made peace with his unrequited love for Alhaitham, resigning himself to a lifetime of suppressed yearning - but this? This was torture, plain and simple, demanding mental gymnastics that Kaveh wasn’t confident he was flexible enough to contort himself into.

    Kaveh,

If you’re reading this, then I am probably dead, although there is a small chance I am in prison instead. To your right, you will find several important documents. I have given you power of attorney and funds for a legal defense, if necessary. My last will and testament is also attached. Essentially, I have left everything to you.

I love you. Please mourn me for an appropriate period of time, then find a way to be happy.

“Simple set theory,” Alhaitham says, nodding. “Unless (A) equals (B), set (A+B) will always be smaller than sets (A) and (B) separately. I am aware of that, yes.”

Kaveh clicks his tongue. “Well, I hope you are also aware that with all these requirements, you don’t get a set (A+B), or even (A+B+C). Yours is a set comprised of the entire Sumerian alphabet!”

Kaveh has had enough of Alhaitham always loitering around the house. In an attempt to get Alhaitham to go out more often, he jokingly tells him to start dating someone. Much to Kaveh’s shock, Alhaitham agrees—and promptly assigns him as his personal matchmaker. And even though Alhaitham’s requirements for his ideal partner are annoyingly specific, Kaveh refuses to back down from a good challenge. He’s confident in his abilities—that is, until his own feelings start getting in the way...

    Summary

“I’ve already had the lawyers draft everything,” Gao Tu whispered, his voice barely audible, trembling. “Just… I just need your pheromones.”

“You… you’re carrying my child?” he said, voice rough. “And you… you want me to sign these?”

    ---

What if, instead of handing in his resignation letter, Gao Tu handed Shen Wenlang the legal documents he had meticulously prepared, pleading him for help? Begging for the one thing that he needed to keep his child alive?

(So this was something that stuck with me from the novel. Gao Tu mentions that he had put together legal papers to protect the child, and I just wanted to flesh out that idea!)

    “No.”

Gao Tu blinks. Once. Twice. “I don’t understand.”

Shen Wenlang looks up at him with quiet, cutting precision. “No,” He repeats. “As in, I refuse to accept your resignation.”

(Or the one where the last thing Gao Tu expects after handing in his resignation is to hear the word “No.”)
