He’s gotten so used to it over the years that it takes him a second to clock why, this time, it means something more than her steady affection.

    He jerks up and drinks in the sight of her the way a man lost in the desert plunges into an oasis.

    Propped up with sterile, scratchy pillows, she smiles at him as if something valuable has just fallen into her lap.
