Kaori wakes up a week to the day after the accident.
Jin discovers this because he’s fallen asleep slumped forward onto her bed, and she wakes him in turn by running her bandaged fingertips through his greasy hair. He’s gotten so used to it over the years that it takes him a second to clock why, this time, it means something more than her steady affection.
He jerks up and drinks in the sight of her the way a man lost in the desert plunges into an oasis.
Propped up with sterile, scratchy pillows, she smiles at him as if something valuable has just fallen into her lap.

Happiness is fleeting, its like a small and delicate leaf that gets carried by the wind landing each time in a different place over and over again until it reaches the end of its short life span, becoming wrinkled, losing its vibrant green colors… the insignificant part it took in all of existence being quickly forgotten. That analogy could be applied to all living things, plants, animals, humans and demons.

Non. He can enjoy the artistry of a well-planned ball or the satisfaction of a business deal well-struck, but he’s always enjoyed the freedom of not quite knowing what’s coming next. In a long, long life, it’s far too easy to fall into a rut and find oneself constrained to it for decades before noticing.
Even with his taste for surprise, however, Louis holding out a tiny, sooty, sniffling child is a shock he is not best pleased by.
He flicks his eyes up from the big-eyed, dripping moppet, raising a brow and feeling his lip curl slightly in distaste. The child reeks of smoke and fear and God only knows what else.
“Put it back,” he says flatly.
