Mother's Day has always been difficult for Grace. Anything to do with mothers has been difficult since losing her. Having forgotten her when he woke up in space doesn't make it any better. It only means he has to cycle through every terrible memory again.

Rocky stomps one of his limbs. "No. Rocky want to know about Grace parent."
"Fine, fine. When you go back to Erid and they ask why you're a Grace expert and not a human expert, don't come crying to me. My parents were... Let's see..." Grace frowns. His chest lights up with a strange warmth when he thinks of them, a gentle joy with dread creeping around the corners like a cozy Sunday night with the week looming ahead. He knows he loved them and that he was loved in return. Everything else, though, draws a blank. Grace's shoulders slump. "I don't remember. Sorry, Rocky."

Well, I say "her hand," but maybe it's his hand. Or some other pronoun I don't have a word for. They might have seventeen biological sexes, for all I know. Or none. No one ever talks about the really hard parts of first contact with intelligent alien life: pronouns. I'm going to go with "she" for now, because it just seems rude to call a thinking being "it".
[what if you wake up in space and for the first time in your life you're free from the gender panopticon so you assign your new alien best friend the objectively best gendered pronouns. which are not your pronouns. and then your new alien best friend asks hey, what's up with that?]

“Adrian will understand,” Rocky says confidently. “Will be excited to meet alien. Will be excited to meet person who brought me home.”
“Yeah, and I'm excited to meet them too, but after that!” Is this a translation error? A cultural miscommunication? How is Rocky not getting it? “You're partners. They're not going to want some alien around while you're, like… going on dates and all that.”
“Does not mean no time for Grace.” Rocky’s starting to sound frustrated. Part of me feels bad, but the rest is just as frustrated. “Why think this, question? On Earth, just abandon friends when have mate, question?”
It's so clearly a rhetorical question, to which the answer is obviously supposed to be no, of course not. I freeze up anyway.
