He doesn't know how to make his mamma understand that what August did didn't hurt him, because "hurt" is just a four letter word, short, cute almost, for a child who'd scraped their knee or stumbled down the stairs- simple, small, insignificant.
It didn't hurt Wilhelm. No. It destroyed, annihilated, desecrated, shattered, demoralised, demolished, maimed, mutilated, damaged, wrecked, ruined, marred. But no, not "hurt", it hadn't hurt him at all.

Mike was holding his hand; they had gone out for lunch. Their hands slotted together neatly, and Will could feel Mike’s pointed knuckles with his thumb. He could sense himself glowing, beaming even. No one had cared, no one batted an eye.
They shared a milkshake, Will looking up through his eyelashes to see Mike looking back. Mike’s nose crinkled, grinning while he still had the straw between his teeth. It was like they were any other couple.
