There was a thought experiment that she and Ty had read about a few years before everything went to hell, about whether a cat left in a box with a radioactive isotope rigged to a Geiger counter and a flask of poison was alive or dead. The creator of the experiment concluded that the quantum state of unknowing ended when the cat was observed: that before that point in time, it was entirely untangled from reality. That was to say, it was neither dead nor alive.
