Summary
The moment stretches, taut and terrible. Finney’s hands are trembling, his chest a furnace of heat and panic and something older, something rotten that’s been fermenting in him since Robin disappeared.
“You fucking—you look like him,” Finney spits again, voice low and cracking and breaking like a tree branch imploding underneath it’s own weight. Self-sabotage in all its chaos and glory. And before Ernesto can react, Finney’s fist jerks forward like the movement is intrinsic and practiced to its core—a sharp hit to the jaw, the sound of impact splitting the air, and then another.
Ernesto staggers back, hands up, wide-eyed like a deer under the interrogative gaze of headlights, but he doesn’t fall. Not at first. His mouth cracks open, a sharp gasp, but Finney barely hears it over the whirling storm inside his own skull. He swings again, a wild, desperate motion, the world around him tilting, blurring. He’s not even aiming anymore—just striking at the air, at the memory, at the grief that’s taken shape and manifested horribly, devastatingly as the boy standing in front of him.
Or; Finney misses Robin. Ernesto suffers the consequences.

Summary
“The car,” Finney’s words falter slightly—he rests his forehead against the scratched interior of the phone box, watches the way his breath mists up the glass as though those two movements collectively might erase just how humiliating it is to ask for help like this.
It doesn’t work. Finney holds the phone tighter. “It just stopped, like, completely. I can’t make it start, Rob, I don’t know what the fuck’s goin’ on but—”
A soft chuckle drifts from the other end of the line; slow and warm, syrupy and sweet in a way that makes Finney want to punch the shit out of him, but also makes something tighten and swirl low in his chest. Robin is infuriating and he’s also really hot, and Finney swears to God that in moments like these ones? He fucking hates Robin Arellano.
Or; Finney's car breaks down, and Robin fixes it.

Summary
There are freckles on Finney’s nose Robin doesn’t remember being there last summer. Sun from biking and walking and afternoons by the water. Robin feels strangely—and stupidly—protective of them. As if they are the most concrete proof that Finney is still here, still alive, still real.
Finney isn’t reciprocating the look—he never does when he says things like that; as though he can be all open and honest and raw and it doesn’t mean a thing if their eyes never meet. Maybe he just doesn’t know how much he means them. Maybe he knows all too well. Either way, the ease with which Finney seems to go about this—seems to go about a lot of things, he’s realising as of late—makes Robin ache in a way that is new and biting and unfamiliar.
Robin feels the old instinct rise—because old habits die hard, don’t they?—the one that screams deflect, joke, shrug it off as though it’s nothing. It’s hard to do that when it’s kind of everything.
Or; Robin spends a summer falling in love with Finney.

Summary
Finney’s fingertips brush his knee again as he pulls away, brief but grounding. That had been it. That was all.
But Robin remembers the way it had lingered; in the heat of the day, in the ache of scraped skin, in the quiet pull of Finney’s hands against him.
He watches the memory unfold, leans back on his hands, feels the way the jagged edges of cracked concrete cut into his skin when his eyes lift up to the sky-that’s-not-quite-sky; colourless and endless.
“...yeah,” he murmurs, and the word is small and shaky. “I get it now.”
Or; Robin takes a walk through the afterlife.

“There wasn’t any time,” he just says—and it’s vague, but Finney thinks he gets it. “I didn't get to choose how I left.”
Finney closes his eyes, just for a second. This side of Robin is unfamiliar. It's soft. It hurts.
“I would've,” Robin speaks again, and Finney just looks at him. “You know that, right? I would've come to you. If it were up to me.”
The words feel like a promise; like if Robin has been thinking about anything for the past four years of whatever is on the other side, it’s this.
Or; Robin and Finney meet one last time, in a dream.

Finn ground his molars, already hitting his limit on vulnerability for the month, but nodded.
“Why don’t you like me? I-I mean, beyond just the whole…concert date-thing, with Gwen.” When Finn didn’t reply right away, Ernesto blustered. “It’s just, if I did or said anything rude or—or disrespectful, I’d like to know, so I can fix it.”
Because whenever I look at you and Gwen, I think of the future that motherfucker stole from me and Robin. You two are everything we can never be, and it hurts like hell.
