Summary
Here’s the thing.
Eddie’s in love with his best friend.
He doesn’t know how or why it happened, just that it must have built up little by little over the years until it blossomed into this all consuming feeling pushing at the walls of his chest. Sometimes he worries it’ll crack a rib, that they’ll creak and flex beneath the weight of it the way Bucks had when he performed CPR on him, but rather than holding strong like Buck’s, his ribs, weak from years of ignorance, will snap.
Because he should have known. He should have known when he booked the appointment with his attorney and wrote Buck’s name into his will. He should’ve known when a bullet pierced his shoulder and blood spattered over Bucks face, and in that moment between seeing and feeling, absolute terror over Buck’s safety pierced him with as much force as the bullet.

“Listen, Eddie,” Buck's voice is small, and his head is dipped in submission, eyes locked on Eddie through his lashes. It's maddening to watch. “About last night… I'm really–”
Eddie has closed the space between them before he even fully realises, and then Buck's face is in his hands and he's kissing the stupid apology right out of his mouth.

“What is it?” Eddie asks, gently taking Buck’s hand in his and guiding their hands to rest on his chest. “You can tell me anything. You know that, right?”
Buck groans.
“You can’t laugh,” he mumbles, just loud enough for Eddie to hear him. “You have to promise.”
Eddie gives him an amused look. “Okay. I promise I won’t laugh.”
And sure, Eddie says that now.

Everything suddenly goes still. It’s like the blood in his veins, the air in the room, the entire goddamn city, freezes in place for the length of a heartbeat.
And then it all comes rushing back at full speed, stealing the breath from his lungs and any thoughts from his head that aren’t EddieEddieEddie; his name a litany, a prayer being tattooed onto Buck’s ribs by the frantic beat of his heart.
