Summary
Tommy Miller loves being an uncle. He always has. When his brother Joel and his niece Sarah move from Austin to Jackson after a rough year, Tommy thinks things might finally start looking up for all of them. He’s got a steady job, a wife he adores, a kid he’s raising as his own, and another on the way. For once, life feels settled.
Then Sarah brings home a girl named Ellie Williams.
At first, she’s just a name, a face at the edge of family dinners and weekend visits. But as the months pass, Tommy starts to see things that don’t sit right: bruises that don’t have explanations, eyes too tired for a kid her age, the kind of silence that hides something ugly. And before he knows it, the protective instinct that’s always made him the “fun uncle” starts turning into something else entirely: fear.
Told month by month through Tommy’s eyes, this is a story about family, loyalty, and the quiet ways people save each other when no one else is watching.

He’s not much of anything, really. A shell, perhaps. A ghost of what he once was, doomed to haunt the earth forevermore.
Melodramatic.
So when his not-quite-girlfriend-but-also-not-quite-not-girlfriend-partner? calls him at 3 in the morning, summoning him to the ER, his mind has no choice but to follow the worst case scenario. Spiral out of control as he drives on autopilot, not quite the same roads he drove that September evening. But similar enough, situationally, for his mind to trick himself.
He’s quite melodramatic, afterall.(or: modern universe where Joel meets Ellie AFTER David, but is still the best father in the universe. lots of angst, then lots of comfort, then lots of fluff)

Sometimes, Ellie got the strange sensation of being in a hotel, somewhere completely impermanent and impersonal. It was all too easy to picture the others leaving and simply never coming back, Ellie waiting in the empty space like a sad little foster kitten, ridden with fleas and whining at her food bowl. Then some new group would arrive and inform her it was theirs now, and that would be that. This place she called home could be rid of any trace of her in a matter of hours.
(Or: Ellie is a drug dealer. Joel is a dad. Bonding ensues.)
