Aki doesn’t seem to find pleasure in smoking. Doesn’t seem to be an addict waiting for his next hit. Out there on the balcony, the faint glow of the cigarette illuminating his fingertips, he instead looks like a man in atonement. For what, Angel isn’t sure. Aki has always been what most humans would call a good man.
Angel steps outside. Aki glances at him.
“You always look so miserable out here,” Angel says.
“Do I?” Aki’s voice is soft, like speaking too loud would interrupt the low drone of insects singing under the stars.
Angel shrugs. “More than you normally do, anyway.”
Aki exhales through his nose like a muted laugh. “Didn’t realize you paid that close of attention.”
“I don’t.” A lie.
Aki stares at him for a moment. Takes a slow drag. “I’m not miserable,” he says quietly. “I just…” he trails off.
Angel waits. The insects sing. Aki sighs.
“Do you ever think that maybe you’re just… not meant for the things you want?”--------
In the months leading up to Aki's death, the Angel Devil unexpectedly moves into his apartment.

Hera would have sighed if she could. “Look, I just… I just miss Maxwell.” Jacobi opened his mouth to say something, but Hera cut him off. “And I know that what I feel is nothing compared to how you must feel, but that’s why I’m asking you. I want you to tell me a story that will make me feel like I know her a little bit better. Like I have something of her to hold on to. Can you do that for me?”
Jacobi paused, then replied, “yes. Yes, I can.”
After everything that goes down in orbit around Wolf 359, Daniel Jacobi finally gets around to grieving for Alana, and understanding what has happened. -
