"Erwin raises his hand and reaches toward Levi’s shoulder. They don’t do that, the two of them. They don’t touch. There are lines in their relationship, the unspoken ones, that they do not cross. Erwin’s fingertips still, hovering over Levi’s shoulder, hesitating. Erwin’s face remains reserved and measured as if contemplating one of his schemes, moving a piece on a chessboard. Levi can swear that he can feel the heat of Erwin’s palm, or rather, he can feel the gap between them. The tension, the hesitation – the lack of Erwin’s fingers on his skin burns the air between them.
