    The move had happened quite suddenly.

    It wasn’t even after the first time Dan had some kind of altercation with his mother, but maybe it was because he’d failed to hide it that time. Maybe Chris couldn’t bear the sight of the bruises. Maybe it’d been the cut on Dan’s lip. Or the black eye. Or the particularly nasty blow to his arm that even made the skin painful to the touch. Whatever it’d been, Dan had never seen that look of dark fury in Chris’s eyes. He hoped to never be on the receiving end of that look.

    Two days after the incident, Dan was woken up mid-morning to Chris standing at his front door, folded-up cardboard boxes in one hand and a large roll of packing-tape in the other. Dan greeted him half-groggy and definitely not fully alert, “Chris? What’s—”

    “I’m getting you out of here.”

    A few days out from high school, Chris helps Dan move out of home to escape living with his mother. However, it becomes clear that moving out doesn't solve all of Dan's problems - and as time goes on, they become harder to ignore.
